Can somebody give me some advice in getting the steering cable out of my 76 Ski Nautique? In the last 32 years, I know I've done this before at least 2 times, but must be forgetting some detail. I thought I just pull it out the back of the cable houseing, but can't pull it out.
What am I forgetting? Thanks,

I've already unlatched the housing from the steering box, and turned the wheel until the cable is completely out of the steering box. As i remember, i just unhooked the rod that is the end of the cable from the rutter, and pull it out the back of the boat. it was terribly hard to turn, and so i know it will be kind of difficult, but frankly i wasn't able to move it 1/2 inch after messing with it for half an hour.

do you mean the box at the rear of the boat under the floor? does that have to be taken apart? i wasn't successful in finding a schematic of what that was like, and was trying to avoid cutting the carpet to remove that back center section of floor.
do you think i'm going to have to do that?

I'd think you need to get this apart before the cable can come out. I'll try and find a picture.

Thats it! now I remember.
i'm going to have to cut the carpet, and pull off that nut back there. Thanks for the picture. It answers my question, just not the way i wanted. I'm going to get to cut the carpet out and have to take out that center part of the floor so i can reach it.
solved, thanks.

No problem Jim. Are you planning to cut the carpet so you can reuse it?

Jim,

You can just remove the 4 small bolts and separate the top from the bottom of the block.

Did you recarpet the boat. That rear floor pannel typically just pulls up after removing a couple of screws?

Also, isn't there a circular access port between the motor box and the back seat? If so, I would think you could reach the block through the access port.

Thanks for the morning chuckle Chris, that's a shot from a while back!

That pic also shows where the removable floor fits. Jim, it should be a little wider than the carpeted area beside the engine. Look for the seams before you cut into the carpet.

Tell me if I'm wrong here, but in the 70's boats, they didn't create the access panel yet. At least my 76 and 77 didn't have them. The original carpet was laid over the whole floor. Only the shaft log inspection hole was in the floor. No way to get to it from there alone.

I believe what jim is saying is in order to get to that block, he'll have to cut the carpet and then hopefully unscrew the middle section of the floor... This will evidently ruin the carpet....

you're correct moj. i have carpeted this thing twice in the last 30 years. the last time i carpeted across the whole boat because i thought it looked nice.
both times i replaced the floor piece w/ nice fresh treated plywood, and it's still in good shape.
it will be all fine, i'll just have to get some nice trim to bolt down over the cuts. but first i will have a go at getting it out through the black portal, but don't have much faith that i'll be able to work blind underneath too well. .... even if i can get it out, i'm sure it will be tougher to get the new one back in working through that hole.
the carpet isn't really sacred, as (per a stringer post i had going yesterday) there's a good likelihood that i'll have a long hard love affair with my stringers next winter. that will entail new carpet. .... unless i follow through with this crazy idea to line the floor w/ some thin teakwood deck boards. anybody remember that nautique they did one year in a magazine w/ wood floor? it was pretty cool. dark green i think...it had a catchy name, but forget what it was.

the boat was ski nautique paragon I believe.

Regarding the clamp block I wouldn't even try going threw the inspection cover it's mainly for the shaft log. I would think you would have a better chance by removing the seat and the back panel then reaching in to the clamp block.

It was a Paragon. 1993. Learned something today about the floors on the older skis.

That was a Paragon. Site member Chris Quinn had one. Another member recently posted a floor job where he is using teak on the floor.
I am thinking you may be able to reach the block, but I think you need two hands.

Edit, Chris is right, that will be a much shorter reach.

Chris,
You won't have the slightest chance of getting to the clamp block through the inspection port and probably not even from the rear with the seat removed. However, I might be able to!!

Thanks to Gregg.

Edit....Just to make sure, you should remove the silver nut just north of the white box....not the entire box as I did last night!
