Intake manifold vacuum leaks

Anyone ever run into vacuum leaks through the bolts of an intake manifold? I'm guessing it's not an unusual problem and that some kind of coating for the bolts should be used to seal them up? Any suggestions on what to use?

waiste of time adding sealent to the bolts. The only way that it can leak out of that area is if the gasket is shot and it'll be leaking in a lot of other places besides around the bolts. It's very uncommon for the intake to leak around the bolts hols.

Try some of the blue RTV durring assembly. Were there any copper sealing washers under the heads of any of the original bolts?

I believe this issue is on Bruce's Y block. I think the situation is different than later blocks.

It is on the Y block. When we got it running last year we had vacuum leaks everywhere, including some from the bolts. We tightened up on all the bolts and got rid of most of the leaks. The engine ran good at that point and we wnated to get it broken in so we quit messing with it and put about 15 hours on it. It ran very good.

We're going to start work on it when David comes home in May and are pulling the intake off to cover up the exhaust crossover and then install a marine carb. I'm not sure about the washers, I'll check for those when we pull it off. What is RTV?

do the bolts go through an intake runner? if not then how can it leak?

I'm looking at a pair of gaskets and there appears to be bolt holes in them on each side of the runners. The runners would be the holes that fuel/air leave the manifold and go into the head?

A long time engine builder pointed me to permatex white for bolts that go into a water passage.

Greg, I haven't forgot I still owe you a phone call about that carb. I'm not sure yet if we need a 450 or 600, and am undecided if we are going Holley or Edelbrock.
