Tranny sounding rough

Yesterday I was ideling and put it in gear and heard a rough sound from tranny area. Today when flushing engine out, I placed it in gear at idol and the tranny just didn't sound right. Oil was good, level correct and no signs of water in it. The tranny, I was told is about 2 yrs old and it looks brand new. I know there is not much info to go off of, but does anyone have any ideas of what it could be or what to look for? I don't want to tear the tranny up if there is something I need to address.

Also after coming off a run and going to idol, the boat sometimes will die. It really sucks when pulling up to the dock and it dies.

When idoling through a no wake zone it has started to develop a miss everynow and then. Anyone know of common things I should look for to resolve that as well?

The noise may not be the trans but you damper plate. It's the spring loaded coupling on the flywheel. Check it out.

The rough running could be several things. Carb rebuild? Ignition tune up? Timing advance hanging up? How's you engine/shaft/strut alignment?

OK, how do I check the dampner plate? What should I be looking for? Is this something I should be taking to someone who works on this type of equipment?

All advice would be greatly appreciated.

Is the Hokey Pokey really what it's all about?

One more question, what is the most recommended prop for a 1982 Ski NAutique.
Is the Hokey Pokey really what it's all about?

Did nobody catch this but me. He said when he was slushing it out, which implies to me, it was in the driveway, he put it in gear and heard odd noises. Could those odd noises not have been, at least in part a dry shaft in a dry strut...which you don't want to do James, you will fry your strut bushings. Also, don't a lot of these transmissions rattle a bit in gear at very low (around 600) rpms. So maybe there isnt a problem. As far as the idling problem, I concur with Pete, tune up time adn not related to possible tranny probs.

Get the engine running correctly first. Eric is correct that a rough running engine will make noise in the trans and dampner.

To inspect it, you need to pull the trans and bell housing. Not that bad of a job and many here have done it themselves.

To clarify, i only put it in gear for maybe a minute if that to see if I could hear the noise I was hearing in the water. It's not missing real bad, just sputter now and then. I'm gonna be all over the tune up part. But the tranny scared me. I will get her running properly and follow up on tranny after that.

I appreciate the advice, and PLEASE I hope it's really nothingand me just being anal when it comes to her. I have had the boat fo a couple months now and ran her on the water about 10 times so far. Just want to make sure I don't mess her up so I can have a good summer with the kiddos.

If anyone reading this is from the South Houston, Tx area and know of good shops for parts and work if needed, please pass on the info.

Larry they are noisy when engaged out of the water. I remember when I did the fluid change in my tranny from straight weight oil to Dextron III. Eric advised me to run it in gear shifting between forward and reverse in the flushing process. Made sure I lubricated the strut bearing while running in gear. The noises from the tranny while running with no load were disturbing. It appears they are the norm though without the load on the damper plate and trans.

James give the engine a good tune up (x4) then see if the noise is still there during normal use of the boat. As far as prop selection I think it has been concluded that the Acme 540 is the best and the 542 if heavily loaded.

Thanks guys for all the help. What brought my tranny concern was the one time i heard a squeal type noise come from the engine area when it was engaging and figured i would listen for anything out of norm when flushing it.

I also got a small knick in the prop a couple times back and thought maybe this was something that could have brought this on. Not really sure, and thats why I asked about the prop.

I'm new to boats, and I read the he11 out of this forum for ideas and know hows. I'm trying to find a good parts place in my area for parts that pertain to correct crafts.

I feel Larry's got it! A squeal sure sounds like a dry cutlass bearing in the strut and or a dry shaft packing. Both are water lubricated.

A strut that's bent or really out of alignment will bind the shaft at the cutlass. Even with water, you may get the noise.
Also, if the shaft packing is real dry or getting bad, you will get a "squeel" from it. Check the shaft for scoring at the packing. If you haven't done the alignment, you should open up the shaft packing and take a look at it anyway.

How did you check it? Doing a alignment is when you'll find the strut to hull hole/log/stuffing box is out. Have you done it?

I read thru and at times the bronze plates inside the trans will squeel if a little glazed and to go on a little further take a look at your stuffing box and see if you see any bronze shavings underneath on the hull, somtimes with MA the shaft will hit the stuffing box and squeel too and in this case you will see bronze ferry dust underneath it
