I have been trying to get my 64 running and its been fighting me all the way. Right now the Carter YH sidedraft carb is acting up. I had it started last week, but it was running rough and after running it for 10 minutes or so, had a few ounces of fuel in the flame arrestor.

I talked to one guy that suggested replacing the accelorator pump. Did that and its still flooding. When cranking the engine over gas is "perking", not spraying out of the nozzle.

Any ideas what to try next?

Steve,
Sounds like somethings up with the vacuum. You do realize the YH accelerator pump is vacuum assisted/activated. Everytime the engine is started and stopped, the accelerator pump is triggered. With a poor running/starting engine requiring multiple starts, you'll get over gassed. This is the problem many don't understand and when fuel starts coming out the tail end they give up and think the carb design is poor. You didn't cover up any holes on the flange with that fancy new elbow or gasket did you?

Do some on line searching. One day, I found a great explanation of how the YH works with helpfull hints. It's printed out but at home.

That would be my .02 also. The YH is basic, but very pickey. The Zenith carbs , same way. Internal air bleed and idle circuit are all about the same, just figure what hole goes where.
The "pump circuit" will go nuts with a vacuum leak at the flange. This all happened after the carbs were pulled.Minor gasket leak, major idle problems.
Your carb and intake stuff is easier to get to than mine.Wanna borrow one of my 63 Zenith Carbs............

But then Steve would need to build another fancy stainless carb adapter! This time 180 degrees instead of 90!!

OUCH!!! ...got me there...

my motor DOES idle...just not vey well..

actually I'm thinking it might be something with a plugged vent... when I took the top off of the carb, there was some pressure in the float bowl. dont know nuthi'n about carbs, but that dont seem right?

Steve,
The internet site where I printed off the YH tech paper ("An explanation of circuits - Carter YH horizontal climate control carburetor") has been shut down and I can't find a alternate. Give me a call if you don't find something obvious or the guy in Florida doesn't help. I'll copy it and male it to you. Do it quick - GL 3 weeks???

Steve, try this guy. His name is Jim, 207-252-0996. He loves this old Interceptor stuff including YH carbs and Dearbos.

Wellll, so much for the plugged vent theory... blew air thru it and its open. I then used an electic fuel pump to pressurize the float bowl. It weeped fuel into the carb throat without even moving the carb linkage.

Bruce, thanks for the name and number...will give him a call...

Well Steve, I'm glad to hear the problem was solved (except for Pam complaining about you spending more money) but fill everyone in!!!

BTW, Reid should know too - he always takes the easy way out - pull the YH's, throw them out and drop a new manifold and downdraft on the engine. One of these days, maybe my "keep it original" will sink into the guy!!

Pete, Like they say...just keep throwing more money at it...sooner or later you've gotta solve the problem..right?

Last week I talked to a few guys about my flooding problem. Most suggested replacing the needle and seat. Saturday, I took the top off the carb, and worked the linkage, without cranking the engine over. It was still pumping raw gas into the throat. So the needle and seat were pretty much eliminated.

I called the guy that had rebuilt the carb 5 years ago, Grant Young, in FL. He said the YH should never pump fuel, without the engine cranking. The carb requires a vacuum to operate the accelerator pump. He thinks the carb body has a leak in one of the factory sealed passages that are non-servicable.

Sooo,I ordered a rebuilt carb from him. He has them on the shelf, ready to go. Yesterday I got the carb...installed it late last night...AND it ran! Still needs some tweaking, And I dont want to "brag" just yet, but she ran for 2 or 3 minutes!

Hope to get her wet this weekend and do some fine tuning. Mannnn, its been a long two months. Keeping my fingers crossed..
