I am still working on the 66 Mustang. Just got the carburetor tuned, completely new electrical, full engine flushed, new carpet, dash & steering wheel painted, shaft repacked...I have a couple questions though for the CCF team...

1) I have a loose ski pylon, how do I go about tightening it. It wiggles back and forth and the bolts to the the floor mount seem to be receded too for the be reached with a wrench.

2) I have a light blue color boat and would like to repair some of the gouges in the gel coat, can I buy color matched gel coat anywhere? Does it work to fill the gouges in and sand/buff the area down again?

3) Engine runs good on the top end all day (36 MPH) but the hole shot is pretty weak and I dont think it will pull a slalom skier up. Any ideas on how to improve this? It has a 289 out of a 67 Ford Mustang and the stock prop.

Thanks for the help

Andrew,
Is there a actual plate at the floor on your pylon or is it simply a hole through the floor. In 66 I would think it would be just a hole with a trim plate unless someone added somthing. How about a picture?

Look for one of the gel repair kits sold at marine supplies. They come with colorants to tint to the proper color. Mix the color first before adding the hardener. Use the tip of a toothpick to add very small amounts of the pigment. It doesn't take much to make a big differencein the color.

The 289 should be performing better than you are reporting. What's the WOT RPM's and what prop is on there now? That boat should have no problem pulling up a skier or two.

There is a plate at the floor but the pylon wiggles while the plate is stationary. The plate has bolts through it but they are receded. The RPM gauge is not working. I believe it has the original 3 blade prop...one of the old skinnier wons (in comparison to the acme on my 196). Would replacing the belts or installing a hi-flow air filter help? The off-the-line acceleration is very slow. It has a foot pedal for the throttle. I have seen youtube video of other 60s mustangs and they are significantly faster off the line.

no imo. no air filter though..a flame arrestor is only needed..and they really donĀ“t restrict air flow...

Andrew,
The plate at the floor is a trim plate and adds more decoration than support to the pylon. What you have is normal. However, do check the condition of the floor.

Yup, No air filter as mentioned! You had better check the health of the engine. I'd recommend a compression test.

WOT RPM?

I have been working on mine, which is I believe the same color. What you really need to do is wet sand and polish the boat 1st.Then match the color, you'd be surprised how much the color changes and you dont want to match then polish. It will be very hard to match but you can get it pretty close and will look better than a scratch. I got my gel from Minicraft and went from there. Post some pictures so we can see the color.
