Hey Guys,

I have another newbie question for you. I have a water leak coming out of the port side fiberglass exhaust tube. I think that is what it is called, but the part I am talkiing about is the area just below the large approximately 4 inch hose coming off the riser. That hose looks to be deformed as compared to the other side. When I bought the boat 2 weeks ago there was a very small leak coming from this area. Now I can see that there are two small cracks in the fiberglass tubes coming out from behind the bottom end of the hose. So my question is :

1. How should I fix it?

2. Is it something a normal person can fix?

3. What is the easiest/best way to get the hose off of the riser?

4. Should the exhaust tube be replace or the suspected damaged area be cut away and reglassed?

Sorry for the long post but I need a little help!

some pics would help to see the problem

1 yes it can be fix with epoxy resin and glass
2 yes you can do it and if you ha ve doubts people here can guido you through..
3 unscrew the lock ties pour some soapy water between the riser and the hose..then pry with a large flat screw driver..this is in case you want to reuse the hose....if not use a gringer and cut the hose....
4 depending on the damage the FB tube can be repaired

Thanks for the info. Will I be able to put a new hose on without taking off the riser or the exhaust tube? If I didn't make it clear I think that the exhaust tube is somehow crushed right under the hose clamps. Any idea how this might have happened? I will try to post pics this weekend.

You'll want to replace any questionable hose with corrugated, wire reinforced, wet exhaust hose. This is below the water line and could sink the boat. Also, a crushed or crimped hose will restrict exhaust flow.

Yes, you can pull the hose w/o pulling the riser. Like Kap said, carefully loosen/pry the hose from the riser(it will be stuck good), and I like to also loosen the other end where it clamps to the through-hull fitting. This way you can pull the whole assembly in to the middle of the bilge and remove as one piece. That last part may not work depending on which boat you have, but others will assist.

Edit-the boat is in the title...duh.

I dont agree 100% with this. For long, straight runs below the water line, reinforced hose is just fine- you only need corrugated if there are any bends. The newer boats dont have any radiuses to worry about. Furthermore, the short (<1') stretch between the risers and invertaflow is not below the waterline- so while its a good practice, its probably not necessary to replace with reinforced hose here- I dont think CC used it from the factory.

Of course, theres no harm in using the corrugated- but theres probably no benefit either, at least in this application.

Leftseat,

I did the exact same repair as you on my 97 sport this winter. Super easy. Be very careful removing the old hose tho, like these guys said, it'll be stuck good and the old fiberglass is brittle and likes to crush when being pryed on!

I used two layers of Bi-axial mat on the outside of the tube and one layer on the inside...overkill but it was my first experience with glass-work. It's a nice kinda repair to cut your teeth on because it's hidden under the hose and no-one can see your hack-job!!

The inside of my exhaust hose was destroyed, falling all apart so while at I chose to replace with new.

If you have trepedations about the repair, I believe SkiDim.com has the replacement tubes...but what fun is that?!

Kap your english keeps me laughing!

My old hull hugger muffler is getting rough around the edges too, y-pipin this winter no doubt!

Tim...Why so, too loud?

Leftseat, forgot to comment on your question #4....the recomended repair is to find something of same inner diameter, modified two liter bottle maybe, and start from new after removing all the old brittle glass, using the modified bottle inside the remaining bit of tube to wrap the glass around, then remove when done. Mine wasn't too bad so i just straightened it out best i could and went to town on it! not the best looking but it works

Someone here repaired a muffler inlet a few months ago and took great pics....try searching "muffler repair" i believe that should do it
