My throttle cable broke at the control end where the inside wire/cable attaches to the sliding chrome part. I attached a small rope and pulled it out to aid in replaceing. The red cable housing measures 16 feet. the total lenght is about a foot longer. do I use the housing measument and order a 16 foot cable? Best source? Just over $30 at skidim but I have already used my discount there.

For thousands of years men have felt the irresistible urge to go to sea, and many of them died. Things got better after they invented boats.

You want a 17' cable. You can use the SkiDIM discount multiple times- they dont enforce the "one per year" rule. That being said, I wouldnt get my cables there- they dont sell the good ones. Stick with the red jackets (which are getting harder to find) or the TFXtremes, which are supposed to be the upgrade. White Lake and N3 both have good prices on the Xtremes, as does Go2Marine.
Personally, I would replace both cables while youre in there... if one is junk, they could both be on their way out. Also be sure to get new pivots... Ive seen some dangerously worn out ones. For a few bucks, its worth having new ones and/or some good spares on board. |

I just did this on my 88. Broke in the exact same spot. The local dealer here (Silver Spray) was able to track down a pair of the red jackets for about about the same price. I think they were 35 each. As mentioned, 17 is the length. I didn't need any help routing the cable. They are rigid enough that you can just push them right through to the bilge.
