I have a friend who is interested in this boat he has the holman moody 351w in his shop and will end up either fixing the engine, or buying the boat in which case I will end up doing a rehab... any history on these boats... any opinions on the volvo 280 outdrive?

From the badges it is a champ XVII by champion boats in Miami Fla

It had a Ski Pylon in the back, and the molded in floor pan/wrap around seats are cool...

The 280 is a good outdrive, the best of the old outdrives if properly cared. The 280 came with 3 different gear ratios, it should be detailed at the plaque. There are many different style props for it as well. it can be ran full power in both forward and reverse, and you can turn RH or LH props.

That one you pictured seems to be the 280PT, but I'm not sure how that power trim performs. I know the system on the 280T was crap.

Anything with 270 degrees of 'Oh Sht bar' has to be a runner!

The hull looks a lot like a friend's Place Craft. His is a fast hull but wants to porpoise over 65.

It's a 280PT indeed, it came with 2 different gear ratios, something like 1.61:1 and 1.85:1.

Another issue with this outdrives is replacing the intermediate bearing linkage. You get a clanking sound with the engine iddling and the outdrive to one side. Then you need to move the engine for servicing the bearing. The bearing life-span will depend on hours and usage of the boat.

Yes, this boat is currently in my shop torn down to the hull.. I cut out the tub, ground all the paint and gel off the deck, I still need to grind out the stringers. Its getting a massive coosa based reengineer/rebuild, new gel on the deck, drive torn down completely and completely restored. Basically it's getting the full hotrod treatment, not exactly orignal but classy
