I usually keep track of the number of pulls we take and leave an amount based on that, somewhere around $10 or so a ride. That's enough to cover getting the boat there as well. If it's an all day thing then then maybe a little less. We've been doing this for many get togethers and it always seems to work out for me when it's in my boat. When people come to my house I don't expect them to leave money, but if that happens a few times I stop asking them to come out with us.

Same here.

I have also gotten into the habit of sending cans home with those who come out and ski often.

That's great, I'll be sure to have a can in the truck and put it in the boat either before or after, but since we don't run ballast or drive to find the good water we really don't use much. With the neighbors it all works out in the end and everyone fills their own boat.

I had 2 stickers on each side of my last boat that said, this boat runs on gas not thanks. We used to get a kick out of going to the local beach, boat owners want one and their passengers would ask what it meant.

If someone asks about gas money, I usually reply by asking that they bring beer the next time out. It works well, and it's a little less direct. We go through a lot of beer and gas, so it works well.
Around our place, it's not the boats that run through the fuel, it's the SeaDoos. 4th of July weekend, we went though about 110 gallons of gas, 80% went in the SeaDoos. They are usually operated by my sons and a couple of their buddies. I have them run to the gas station every so often (reference the beer comment earlier), but I pay. I knew it was going to be costly when I bought them, but when we have guests at the cottage, I pay for gas, guests can bring food and beer.
This upcoming Labor Day weekend, My buddy, who has a cottage 10 doors down, and I are going to monitor how much gas we go through. His two PWC's and a Malibu (for tubing), and my BFN and three PWC's, and a pontoon we share. I'll report back.

Standard is about $10 these days. It used to be about $5 but that was when gas was $1.25. My general rule is if it's the first time out with me it's my treat but next time they'll need to throw in a few $$ for gas. Of course when my daughters friends go with us it's on me. No charge for CCFans as I know it will come round full circle.

Here's 15 bucks....oh and I brought a cooler full of cold ones, want one?!

We wakeboard behind a couple different thirsty v-drives so our gas bill is a little higher, and it's nice to have extra beer for guests who aren't in the habit or know to bring anything

I try to keep the beer and the skiing separate. One or two beers is ok but most people can't hold back....

Pontoon boats are for beer.

nice feedback!!! we also kinda make a big pot and through the food, beer and gas and then split the total...
but lately I´m going out with the family, so no one to split with

what kills me is the cruise time..I have almost 1 hour drive to the ski area for only say 15 minutes of ski barefoot..etc...
I need to get a house near a lake...

Different people, different policys... I can't drive myself or spot for myself so I am generally not looking for anything but consistent attendance... I will teach or take anyone with interest.. those that never help out one way or another will stop getting invited.

For me I would rather have someone that physically puts the gas in the boat, helps bring the equipment in and out, shows the boat and equipment respect while it is out there, and helps cover and hoist at the end than someone who just offers money. Beer is always welcome... in cans.. keep your bottles in your car my camp and boat dont need broken glass.

Well said Joe, Help at the doc or boat ramp is worth more than any gas money, fortunately we've weeded our crew down to lifetime boater's so it seems to usually flow pretty smooth.

As for drinking and boating, I'm not saying we stick a keg in the middle and go at it, but a few through the course of an afternoon is alright. Luckily we're all past the college days and everyone seems to be ok at pacing themselves, plus there's usually a couple of people who filter into the boat as the day progresses, and we've got em covered!

Joe sorry about the bottles last year at GL, just wasn't thinking.

Once I saw you in flyby mode, I knew why you gave them back.

As far as gas, when & invite friends with families out, how can I accept money?    It would be like asking someone over for dinner & then charging them for the food.

Chris - never apologize for offering me beer.. the no bottle rule is not always readily apparent, but I have a rocky shore and a boat that I tend to drive like I stole it so glass is a bigger deal for me than most.

you know, its funny, I had a communion for my daughter and bought 2 cases of beer, those bastards polished that off in about 2 hours and let me know i needed more beer, my first reply was "this is a communion not a drinking party so i did agree to go get another case and took the main beer drinker with me, i call him 4 to 1 cause he drinks 4 beers to my one...well we get to the store and he waits at the front counter and tells me to go get what you need to get, in other words i thought he was going to kick in...he didnt
so the past weekend was his kids birthday party and the mfer lets me know he is only buying 1 case of beer, we ran out real quick, he tells me i need some cash from you to get more beer. FU its your party.
this is my neighbor btw.
I look at it this way, when you invite distant friends for a one time deal you buy, but if they tend to stray to your house every weekend you make them kick in. One of the biggest reasons i dont have a boat in a boating community is because guys would give you 5 bucks drink all your beer and at 8:30 at night would grab they're towels and boogie leaving you to pull and clean the boat. its costly to run a boat and if you divide the payments and all the monies invovled even if you get 50.00 from each person, it doesnt cover the cost

I know first hand that you are not one of the Freeloaders being referenced here.   You are always welcome when you're in the hood. Just bring your barefoot suit.
BTW, on the weekend, I'm not sure which would be the bigger cost, beer or gas. It depends on the weather. Good weather gas, bad weather beer.

I agree with Joe, helping with the boat and gear is worth more then gas money. I also can not drive the boat while I ski, nor watch while I ski. Most of our friends that go to the lake with us have something that I do not have. One group of our friends has a travel trailer, so we use their trailer when we camp with them and our boat.

I did not buy a boat for it to make me money or to break even on it. I bought to have fun with and burn gas. It gets very boring fast just driving the boat to burn gas. Most importantly is that all my friends that go to the lake help with the boat, gear, and food. In the end they still offer gas money. We all know how to tell the difference between friends and moochers.

I didn't even get a boat ride! I'm kind of random with my generosity, I think it all works out in the end though. I'm certainly not counting.

When the local barefoot guys took my kids out for a barefoot lesson I took them out for breakfast. My way of showing my appreciation. Their response was that that wasn't necessary but here's my number if your kids want do it again next week.

If I invite you to ski all I expect as that you respect the equipment and have a good time. If I see you pulling into the driveway everytime I'm about to ski I'll change my times.

If your gonna set up a regular time with a group it should be understood that you switch boats every so often or help with the gas bill. It might have explained up front so there are no bad feelings after the fact.

I'm definitely on the side of pitching in. If I go out with a friend for a few pulls, I usually throw them a $20 and help with everything I possibly can. I like to bring people along and teach them and I don't mind footing the bill a little bit. After the first couple times it is nice when people pitch in, whether it is gas money, beer or even helping with loading, unloading, or cleaning/wiping.

It is definitely expensive to go out there boating, and it is nice when people understand it and pitch in to help with the cost. Too many times not pitching in and I stop inviting those folks.

I used to tell my brother, who always left his wallet, that the boat runs on the water, and it's not, the boat runs on water. But sometimes you need a driver, you can't ski and drive at the same time. A friend of mine has a '96, I give him $20 each time we go skiing in his boat. I don't like sponges who eat and drink and never help chip in on gas.

there are 2 kinds of people, givers and takers, the ones that try to give, I never accept that ones that dont get outcasted. that leads me to another dumb ass story,
it was the dead of winter, 8:15am and i was out of Propane for my lift truck and i tell one of my guys to run the tank up the street no more than 1/8 mile away.. about 10 minutes later he comes back in the shop, I ask him where the propane was and his reply was he didnt go get yet. Well what he did was, he went out and cleared all the snow off of my Suburban, fired it up and was letting it warm.
Now he just pulled in 20 minutes earlier with his truck, nice and warm, no snow on it...the gas station is within walking distance. fcn moron, cheap as ***************,

here is another blunder from the same kid, I had a rotted transom on an aluminum boat, easy fix, remove the rivets, dig out the ply and install new.
i came in late that morning, bought 2 pieces of 3/4 ply, the good stuff, I explained step by step how to do it, he wanted to make a cardboard template, i explained no, you have 3 measurements top to bottem, top corner to top corner, bottem to bottem corner, lay it out on the ply and cut it,
well he goes onto making 50 measurements including the outboard engine opening laying it all out on the ply.....my blood temp went up just a couple of degrees and again i explained 3 measurements, drop it in and outline the opening.......ok, we got thru that, 3 hours later.
I gave him the benifit of doubt, cooled down and went on about my day.
this is where it gets good, go check to see what he is doing and he is doing identically the same exact thing on the second piece, dead middle of the ply..thats when my cork popped, WTF!!!!!! he got so pissed at me and went home. Its 12:00 oclock and the wood is not in yet.

this is the way you do it, 3 measurements, drop it in, outline the motor opening, cut it, fit it, mix some resin drop it on the other piece (not in the middle) screw it together and saw it....1 hour tops
sometimes the Brunstucky school system baffles me. maybe its me?
