Was a little shocked when I saw the news this morning...
A preacher in Gainesville organises a "Burn the Koran day". WTF??? Now... I'm showing the flag on my facebook page against the building of the mosque near Ground Zero and I'm not very fond of the Muslim way of thinking, but I do not feel this is a good thing. To me it'll only produce more hatred (and possibly a new wave of terrorist attacks)... And, it will put the US soldiers in the Middle East in even more danger than they already are now. We are at war against Muslim extremism, but this is not the way to fight that war... |

Just like building the Mosque near Ground Zero. Just because he has the right to do it dosen't make doing it right. He is trying to prove a point however the ramifications of his actions may cause serious ill effects. He will aggrivate alot more people than the ones he intended to. The innoncent Muslims will be offended and the radical ones will seek revenge. This is just going to add fuel to a fire.

Kris, agreed this type of demonstration will likely acheive nothing positive.
We could debate whether this will cause additional Muslims to "cross over" into the extreme and target Westerners. I would argue that those susceptible to such persuasions are likely to chose any random event they feel sacrilege or offensive to Islam as a turning point. Kris, I'm interested to hear of your experiences w/ the Muslim population in Belgium, and Europe as well. Likewise, I would like to hear the experiences/opinions of the other members we have from overseas. From what I have heard and read the European experience w/ Muslim immigrants is a bit different from our experience here in the States. About a month ago I posted a link to a video which my father had sent me. Three things about Islam. I had a few concerns regarding the video and I took my father to task on them. Primarily, I felt the video perpetuates intollerance by calling into question the honesty of the Muslim population as a whole. In hindsight, I should have held that post until I had the time to commit to an in-depth, on-line conversation regarding the topic. So my apologies to those who responded. While I have concerns regarding Islamic extremism and how we as a civilized society respond to it, I feel an equally important issue at hand is how we interact with the moderate Muslims around us. My impression is that the Muslim population in the States has become a more integrated population than their counterparts in Europe. I could very well be wrong, it's simply my impression. Their integration into Western (free) society being important because ultimately I feel is it the moderate Muslim's responsibility to address, attack and irradicate Islamic extremism. As of now I am not overly impressed with those efforts. To borrow an old phrase...If they are not going to be part of the solution, then they are part of the problem. At this point in time I feel it is imperative for moderate Muslims to move to the front in the effort to combat Islamic extremism. While our response to this news item may be to grimace or cringe or even for some, to feel ashamed of some of their fellow Americans, I believe one important point to take away from this is the fact that this fellow has the right to do such a thing without having to fear prosecution from his government for a peaceful, albeit offensive, demonstration. This would not be the case under an Islamic government. |

I love how the media spouts free speech and freedom of religion when covering the mosque but states the christians are insiting violence. These are both the same issue. Just because it is legal does not make it ok. In both cases living in a country that allows freedom means you should honor it, not abuse it. I also noticed that those against the mosque are not calling for violence, as the so called "religion of peace" is around the world in response to a book that has yet to be burned. I personally hope the guy is just making this point and does not go through with it.

My experience about the Muslim community is that many of them are "integrated", but still remain Muslim in the first place. An example of that is that a very moderated Muslim I know very well, who drinks beer at our local bar just like us, makes jokes about forreingers just like us, skies behind my boat and so on, shocked me a little when I asked him (quite a few years ago) what he would do if he would encounter Salman Rushdie (at the time he wrote his book about the Koran... "I would kill him right away, like the Ayatollah asked us"... I think Dave says it best:
My personal problem is that we all have to be SOOOOOO politically correct with them, while they show no respect for us... |

Yes, and we moved past that ignorance by realizing the importance of seperating the powers of the church and the state and recognizing the rights of the individual. I'm not saying the state isn't and shouldn't be influenced by religious beliefs to a certain degree. I'm saying the church, or organized religion, or whatever you like to call it, should not be the governing body of the populace nor should it have a disporportionate influence over the governing body. This is not the case in Islamic countries. While we may find extremists among all religious beliefs. Aside from Islam, there is no other religion in the world, at this point in time, where you will find so much direct and indirect support for a form of extremism which harbors such disregard for personal freedom. And by indirect support I mean anything short of outright rejection and repudiation.
Dave is absolutely right, freedom carries so much responsibility and demands a high degree of self-control.
This is a primary concern I have w/ certain Muslim populations. From what I have read and heard some have shown a propensity to be quick to claim the "freedom of religion" and slow to respect the same for others. Has your experience proved otherwise? I think the one experience you related partially answers this question. Mr Rushdie is free to have and express his religious views and other Muslims will lay claim to this same right. But when his view is diagreeable or objectionable he should pay for it with his life? I would say that Muslim is not so integrated or moderate. He sounds more like the so-called "wolf in sheep's clothing" to me. |

What about the little reported on fact that the Greek Orthodox church is getting flack and being held up on the rebuilding of their church which was destroyed on 9/11. Why are they having so much trouble? Why is that not making news? As far as I know no citizens are opposed to their rebuilding. Where's the equality?

What about the 10 or so Chrisian's who were killed recently in a Non Christian country for simply trying to spread the Christian faith to a Godless country and all we did as a Nation was say we are sorry for them and their families? With this deal in Florida, the whole world is wondering what is going to happen because some Preacher and his followers are burning a bunch of paper with writing on it which he has the right to do. I don't think the preacher should follow through with this burning because I think it is all just a publicity stunt and something the media can report on in their gloom and doom column after they ran out of things to print when the BP oil well was capped!!
Obama will probably break out in hives saturday if this happens. |

I've got over 31 years in total military/civil service with the Navy and Marines. Some how I've never seen OUR UNION JACK mishandled in any way in person. I WILL give my life to stop it. I cry at a ball game, race or any public event when our National Anthem is played. I know the cost of freedom and I'm proud to be a Patriot!

I Usually don't dive into these discussions, and I will preface my stance by saying the guy in Gainesville is obviously very dim and couldn't think of a fresh or creative way to make himself heard...burning books is obviously ignorant, and on the same level as the "death to christian's" crowd.
With that being said, Does it not strike anyone here as remotely odd and f----d up, that the advocate, Iman, was on the news issuing a warning to Americans, not to protest the Mosque site or it will cause violence from the radicals? He was warning us to not protest his people, when he is citing his right to free speach in a FREE country! We have our hands tied behind our backs with beuaracratic red tape! They can attempt to destroy Christian societies systematically, one by one, with their cowardly attacks on innocent people, who simply have a different religious and cultural belief than them...but we aren't even allowed to protest their violence, clear hatred of christianity, harboring of terrorism, and in-humanity in our own country?! It's ok for them to threaten, and kill...but this guy can't burn a book if his simple brain feels like it? I have lost several good friends over-seas in the last few years and it hurts to see someone so close to home, issuing warnings against what my friends as well as thousands of others have fought and died for...Our freedom in a FREE country! |
