I am trying to decide what my Christmas gift might be this year, choice between an acme 540 or trialer brakes, I am guessing I am in the same price range. I tow with a dodge dakota, currently no brakes on the trailer. Will probably try to make the 5 hour trip to green lake again this year. Do I go for fun or safety. ( I think I already know the right answer.) Does anyone have a parts list of what would be needed to convert the hubs to braking, would I be happy with surge brakes considering I have no brakes now? Cost is a major factor. Sources?

I look at it this way, trailer brakes will slow you down and that shiney 540 will make you go faster

You can be really poetic went you put your mind to it Eric

My Christmas list is already a mile long with all I want for the boat to make it look great again for next ski season .

I want some deep dish carbon wheels for my bike. That will make me go faster. Could use a new hull-hugger muffler for the '96 too, that's more of a need than a want.

Putting surge brakes on my '87 trailer was one of the first things I did back in '00. I had a '97 Chevy Blazer at the time, and there was just not enough braking capacity in it to make me comfortable.

I bought Dexter free backing brakes & hubs, an Attwood actuator, a new set of bearings, various brake fittings, brake line & SS bolts. I think I ended up spending ~$600.

Check out www.dexteraxle.com Their resource library has a wealth of info.

Really quite easy as long as the axle has the mounting flanges already welded to it.

I have a detailed material list at home which I'd be happy to share.

Fire away with any other questions.

Thanks Glen, sounds like the first step is to check for the flanges, Should have done that before it snowed. Will keep this thread bookmarked if I pursue it to get your input. All the Acme cheerleaders are just making the decision harder.

I went with the trailer brakes first, then got an Acme later. That was because I didn't realize how big of a difference the Acme would make. If you have a stock prop on there now, you won't believe the improvement.

For your trailer brakes, www.trailerpartsdepot.com. $475 shipped to your door. It's a whole kit that works just great with your trailer. The only thing you'll need to do is swap out the grease seal with the spare seal they provide you. It's easy. I am planning on running hard brake lines in the future, as this kit only provides flexible lines. But it works, and it definitely helps stop the whole rig.

And if your trailer is an un-altered Correct Craft trailer, it will have the flanges (5-hole) already mounted to the axles.

I dont want to discourage you from being safe, so if you feel you need better brakes, by all means spend the money. I will point out that trailer brakes were still optional in '87 though, and dont appear to have been installed very commonly (though they were optional) prior to that. Our BFN, for example, weighs in at 2750 lbs (dry) and the original #4 trailer (another 675 lbs) doesnt have brakes. You definitely feel it back there, but our 4Runners stopped it just fine, even with an extra 600lbs of foam in the nose. I guess it all depends on how often and how far you tow, how good the brakes are on the tow vehicle, etc.

The 540, on the other hand, is a nice piece for sure!

I'm going to ask for nothing other than Guitar Center gift certificates. It's time for the HD-28 to join the stable of axes.

I'll probably end up with clothes and kitschy/useless "thoughtful" stuff, but here's to hoping.

That shiny new prop won't do you much good if you pile it up on the way to the launch ramp. I nearly piled mine up this summer when a car in front of me stopped quick to make a left turn. If I didn't have room on the shoulder, it would have been a mess. My Martinique might be a little heavier than yours and I am pulling with a much heavier Suburban. Brakes will be going on mine as soon as I pull it out of storage in the spring.

Most seem to want me to live fast and die young. to late to leave a good looking corpse. fun vs. safty. Sadly it may be whichever is cheapest that wins.

My pops has a Martin VD-28. I know the V stands for Vintage, but not sure what the difference is. Either way it is like playing a concert grand piano as opposed to my 1952 Gibson LG-1 which is like a speed acoustic, and does not resonate the same way as the larger Martin. I was hoping to do some picking with Barefoot Eddie at Reid's this summer but he had to go to a football game so I had to go at it solo.

Back to Christmas- a pair of bindings that fit my size 13 hobbit feet!

This year or ever? Have you ever heard this one Marty?
Sven and Ole are crossing the street one January day and get hit by a bus, of course being Sven and Ole they end up going strait to hell. The devil sticks them in a special hot room for newcommers and after a day comes in to check on them. Sven and Ole are partying away haveing a good old time and the devil inquires arent you guys hot? They say "avter a coming from a cold Minnesota vinter dis is like a tropical vacation." Undetoured the devil bumps up the heat up full. The next day same results. "Dis is da best veader yet". Finally in frustration he turns the heat off all together. The next day he finds Sven an Ole frost on the walls, shivering and blue, little icycles hanging from their noses, but happier than ever. The devil says how can you be so happy? Ole says "look, hell hass frozen oofer, our beloved vikings must haf finally von da super bowl."

Its frustrating being a Minnesota sports fan. Maybe next Christmas.

Eric

The trailer has brakes but they were inoperative at that time. The trailer had never been used for travel, only storage. I haven't had a chance yet to go through the brake system. New brake actuator is on my Christmas list.

Dear Santa,
The only thing I want for Chrismas is a Altered drag car with a 632 big block chevy and a pro glide transmission.
My wife would like an over & under Browning shot gun, she's had her eye on it for a while. Santa I know she will be very surprized.

It sounds like you always trailer and don't seem too serious about the skiing. Please don't take offense to that or think it has anything to do with ability. The difference between brakes and no brakes is much larger than CNC finished and cast. For your safety and everyone else on the road, get the brakes.
