Happy new year everyone,
Got a couple questions for ya. My 96' Nautique has the standard PCM 351, model number PLDPRR12PP, carbed, with the 1:23 tranny. When I changed my oil during winterization, I put Mobil 1 10w-30 synthetic in it. Now Have looked at my manual and found they reccomend a 40w for my engine (manual has PL&RD model and PL&RP model, which one do I have?). I hope that this is not going to be a huge issue, and would hate to waste that 6$/qt. oil. Am I going to be alright with this and what oils do you reccomend? Secondly, what type of tranny oil do you guys suggest? Thanks for the help |

Levin - Assuming your '96 is a flat tappet cam, you might want to bite the bullet & replace the Mobi1. Several guys have had problems with synthetic ruining their cam. Maybe you can capture it & use it in your car. We pretty much voted in Valvoline VR1 20-50W as the oil of choice in the 351W.
For the tranny, check to see if it has brown motor oil or red ATF. Replace with whatever is in it, as converting to ATF takes some flushing. ATF to use is Dexron III. Not sure what weight of motor oil, should say in the manual. Good luck, let us know what you end up doing! Been a few weeks since we discussed oil. |

thanks for the help,
the manual just says a 40 weight oil, I am open to any suggestion, and will go with what is reccomended. Is the 50 weight make much difference from the 40. Will it retard the engine at all being heavier? I am not going to run it anytime soon since she's winterized. I'll keep you guys informed in spring when i bring her back to life. As far as the tranny goes, I am assuming, hook up to fake a lake, pull prop, engage tranny and let idle for a bit to warm up the fluid before sucking out? Thanks again |

Do not enguage the trans while out of water even with the prop off. The issue is your cutlass bearings in your strut can become too hot. I draw my transfluid out with a turkey baster while the trans is old each fall. Warm would be better.
You will find that folks use VR1 and Shell Rotella. I ran straight weight 40 VR1 for two years and now have 20-50W VR1. You need the zink for the flat tappet cam. If your motor has that cam. I hope this helps, Donald |

Thanks for the input, good call on the strut bearings, didnt think about that. Learning new things every time i am logged in. any suggestions on where to search for what cam I do have using the model and serial numbers, or do I just change the oil in spring and run with the 20-50W VR1 no matter what cam I have?
Thanks |

or, remove the 4 bolts at the coupling, run the trans, change the trans oil and then do an alignment.
also Rotella has also been voted as a good oil too for the engine. chances are you do have a flat tappet cam. |

pennzoil or really any decent oil will work. some guys are here try to to get scientific and are out to prove they know whats best. as long you change it every 40-50 hrs, or at the end of the season you will be fine.

351W takes 5 qts with filter. FYI - some of the engine oil dipsticks are not calibrated - my '89's is inaccurate. (had to chose words carefully on that one!)
If you want 40W, consider Shell Rotella - inexpensive & well proven. |

A lot of the guys on this site use the Motorcraft. I also have one on right now, but I also used the PCM filters the last two years. I have a 80 Model.
If you use Fram, just do not talk about it. Trust me on this one. I am not sure what year it started, but the serial number will be stamped on the transom. Top right hand side right below the run rail. The last two digits will be your year. My 80 is stamped into or modeled into the fiberglass. You have a great looking boat. Donald |

Sweet, Halston?
Please turn your caps lock off. It not only makes the posts hard to read but in normal computer communication terms it means you are yelling to get your point across. Nice looking Ski I can tell you are excited about being the new owner. Welcome to CCfan we are all excited to own Correct Craft's here just like you. |

Napa Gold or Wix are a couple other good filters that rated very good too. Just stay away from the Fram and you'll be OK.

Well that owner story is amost right... Brad sold me that boat out of Georgia about 5 years ago. Titled in in Wisconsin... It's a 76' for sure.. Hopefully the boat has had new stringers put in it since I sold it back to him 3 years ago. I put a ton of money in that "soggy boat".... Still looks nice, unless that's an old picture.. Hope it gives you years of enjoyment.. Taught my kids how to ski and board off that oldy moldy... For you reunion goers, this was the famous boat that brought Billy and 79' together to work on a major starting issue the boat had.... I think it was in this boat they shared their first kiss... Hahaha Moj' |

value varies depending on the situation. If you're happy with the boat then I wouldn't even worry about it unless you paid something like 15k lol
Edit- I passed on a soggy mustang this fall for 1,800. To the seller it was a great running boat but to me it was a basketcase. |

Yourself!! Seriously, plenty here have done it. Some with no glass background. The jobs turned out better than some of the so called "pro" jobs we've seen. There's some great threads from start to finish on the jobs done. BTW, paying a pro to do it may run upwards of 14K!! |

I suggest you start doing some reading here on CCfan. 3K for a floor and not stringers!!!!! Ether that or you talked to someone at CC Orlando that was smoking something!! Dave (mojo) had a friend of mine quote a stringer/floor job........He obviously decided to sell the boat!!! Members here are putting in 3 to 4K for materials only. Besides reading up on all the stringer threads here, you may want to do some reading on woodworking. Seriously, as mentioned, some have done the job with no woodworking experience and simple hand tools. |

Halston, Just make sure you do a alignment on the drive line and then keep a eye on it. I'd say every 10 to 15 hours of run time would be good. You don't want to blow the trans and end up sending it to Eric for a rebuild. His pricing is good but still I'm sure you don't need the added expence. |
