I have a '79 Mustang with the original three spoke steering wheel on it. It has a chrome plated button in the center, and a chrome ring under that. I cannot seem to be able to remove the chrome center parts to get at the attaching hardware for the actual wheel. Can anyone help?

Joe,
I went looking for a older thread but couldn't find it. Tim even put up a picture with the location of the snap ring that holds the center cap on. Look real close at the bottom of the center cap. It's a round wire ring.

BTW, why are you removing the wheel? I sure hope you're not replacing the original with something that looks like it came off a Gayliner!!

EDIT:
Joe,
I found the thread on wheel removal The seach feature here can be tricky at times but is still a fantastic tool. You need to enter the correct key word(s)!!

Joe,

I recently removed mine for some good cleaning. I purchased a steering wheel puller, but I did not have to use it. I just pulled real hard with both hands and mine came off. This was after I removed the cap and the nut that is on the helm. The Shaft has a key way. I took the puller back to the store for a refund. I reinstalled with a rubber hammer and the nut pulled it back down.

Once you remove the snap ring, you will see what we are talking about.

I can't believe that there is a snap ring right there, right in front of me, and I have never seen it in 32 years. (I bought this boat new) It was easy to snap it off with an ice pick. The only reason that I wanted to remove the chrome cover was that the wheel seems to be loose. It was that the three screws that hold the three spokes were loose. Thanks for your help. It was an easy fix once I was able to remove that little snap ring.

In my case, the hub was tight. It was the three screws that hold the three spokes of the steering wheel to the hub that were loose. I was able to tighten them once I had the little chrome center cap off. Thanks again. Joe

Good thing you asked Joe,the supply of those caps has dried up.I can also safely say that I don't think there is anything that someone here hasn't done! Here is how horribly it can go,the PO of mine got creative-
