    Posted: June-28-2011 at 10:56am
I have an '85 SN 2001 with a Joystick pylon mounted to the factory pole. I need a cover for the boat but don't have any ideas as to what companies are good and what companies aren't. I've asked around at my local dealer (Nautiques of Orlando) and if I remember correctly, they mentioned http://skiboatcovers.com. So if anyone else could shed some light then that would be great. Thanks.

Not Given,
Try boatcoversdirect.com for your cover. Spend the extra money and get a cover made of Sunbrella if it will be stored outside and exposed to the elements. Look to spend about $600. I think that's about what mine cost for my '96. Worth it in my opinion. My boat stays outside in direct sunlight, cover is only 1 year old now but not faded, doesn't let water in, and I have yet to experience any kind of mildew or mold inside the boat. Had similar cover on my last boat ('83 2001) and similar good experience.

Where in Orlando are you? We go out to the Butler chain almost every weekend and can usually be found at Bird Island on Sundays.

I would try Angola Canvas first, though Ive heard good things about Skiboatcovers.com. Boat Covers Direct sells Carver covers, which fit OK... but I think the other options sell higher quality stuff and their prices are as good or better.

Definitely go with sunbrella- not only does it breathe the best, but it will last darn near forever.

Im not sure what the significance the reference to the Joystick pylon is... can you enlighten us?

Perhaps he is looking for a cover that will allow him to leave the joystick installed all the time? The cover that came with my 83 had a cutout and velcro flap that allowed you to do just that..

Of course it snaps on, only went to the windshield and requires a pole in the back to shed water.. but the way it went around and snapped to the pole was cool.. too bad I dont use the pole anymore.. I really aught to get a new cover sometime!

Thanks, I will give them a look today. Outside durability is a must because we don't have a boat house or cover in our canal slip. I'm on the Maitland chain, but sometimes I take a set on Sawyer Lake weekday mornings at my buddy's place.

Thanks for the reference also, I'm going to check them out as well. I'd really like to find a cover that would have an opening for a pylon, which was why I included that in my first post.

Angola or Skiboatcovers *might* be willing to do something custom like that for you. I doubt Carver would- my impression is that they are a much bigger (higher volume) company.

Though, if you want the opening to be in exactly the right place, you may want to have the cutout added by a local shop who can see the boat in person.

Taking it to a local shop to add a cutout may be an option. Honestly I'm not too concerned with a cutout, it would just be a "nice to have" feature. The Carver covers with Sunbrella material via Boat Covers Direct seem to be a little cheaper ($485.62) than the Sunbrella/Top Gun covers at Ski Boat Covers ($519). They both offer a 5-year warranty, which is good IMO.

I do have a couple of questions though: how do these covers mount to my 2001 if it is in the water and not on the trailer, and would I need a support pole for either of these covers to keep pools of water out?

Either would require a support pole (or 2). They will have drawcords that you tighten, usually at the rear. Also make sure you get a quote from Angola- I suspect they may have the best pattern out of anyone, as they supplied Midwest CC with covers dating back to the 60's. I would expect their price to be in line with the other 2. A difference of $35 is pretty minimal- I would base your decision on which one fits the best.

Also consider whether you want the cover to protect the platform or not. Unless you moor the boat in the water for extended periods of time (rather than on a lift or the trailer) then I would opt to cover it and keep the sun and rain off of it.

There's a canvas guy on Orange Ave. just about a mile or so north of Sand Lake on the southbound side that will do custom work for you. I wanna say he's just south of Lancaster in a big blue warehouse with bunch of boats outside. I wish I could remember the name so you could look him up and call about putting a cut-out in. He does really good work, I just got a quote for a re-skin of my bimini from him and he did the upholstery on my old '83. Came out awesome.

Do the covers from Ski Boat Covers come with a pole(s)? Unless I missed it, its not listed as an purchase option when it comes time to check out.

I think that I am leaning more towards a Sunbrella cover from Ski Boat Covers, especially because of their Rain Pitch. The last thing that I want to do every day after work is get water off the top of the cover w/o it spilling in to the cabin.

Another question, does anyone know what the deal is with SBC's "optional snap-release buckles"? My wife told me that she remembers seeing a cover that clung to the boat by snapping to the rub rail, but doesn't recall the name of the company...

Could it be either JSO Motorsports or All American Marine? Those were the only places that Google pulled up close to that intersection...

Bob at Angola Canvas Co. Had my 299 Dixie Super Skiier Custom boat cover pattern. Turns out they patterened the boat new back in 1984.

My new Sunbrella Cover on the way. Thanks TRBenj for the tip

Thanks for all the info. I've been able to find Cover Sports' website and info, as well as speak to Brent on the phone. I think that I am going to go with him.
