I received the quart of gel coat I ordered from Spectrum Color for my 1993 Nautique.

I plan to brush the gel coat into chips that I need to repair. I used a Spectrum patch paste product previously, which only came with MEKP, but the package I just received is the "regular" gel coat. The gel coat came with MEKP and also with a bottle of Spectrum Color Surface Seal. I can see from the instructions posted the Spectrum Color web site that this material is needed for the product to fully cure.

On the bottle It says I should mix the 1 oz. jar of surface seal with one quart of gel coat. My question is this: Can I mix it with the entire quart and save it until I need it? In other words, can I pour in the surface seal, mix it very well, and then cover the can for use later? Then, I can just mix 1 oz. of the gel coat and surface seal with 12-15 drops of MEKP and do my chip repair a little bit at a time.

Does anybody know? I'd hate to destroy $100 worth of gel coat, you know? I've sent a similar email to Spectrum, but I thought maybe somebody on here would just know.

Thanks!
Kevin

When I did my gelcoat repair, I mixed the ingredients at the moment I needed them.
I wouldn't know if you can mix the surface sealant all at once and save it. I know I didn't do it.

For those who are curious, here's the answer from Spectrum:
- - - - - - - - - -
Yes you can add the whole jar of surface seal to the quart and then mix the gel with the mekp as needed at 12-14 drops per ounce.

That's easy!

Even unmixed, gel won't keep long.
