We have a 1987 Ski Nautique with the 351. It has about 450 hrs. Last weekend reverse when out in the transmission, then drive went out also. The fluid is full and the linkage seems to be working fine. Does this mean I will probably need a rebuild? If so any idea's on how much $ and where I can get it done?

Eric Levine, who is on this site, is the person to talk to.

Eric is our expert. Most of take the transmission out, put on a milk plastic crate, pack it, and send it to Eric. I believe his buisness name is Fantastic Finish Marine (1-877-936-6693). He will treat you and charge right. He is a great guy and his work is great. I bet he will chime in later.

did you hit reverse hard? which would snap the reverse plates and possibly fracture the damper plate?
or, the springs from the reverse section got hung up somewhere, regardless, it has to come out, more symptoms may help, 877-369-6693 |

My brother was driving the boat at the time, not sure if he hit reverse hard or not. I know the they used the boat after losing reverse. When drive when out it was at take off. The boat started to come out of the water and then it was like it just hit neutral. After that it was done.
I did notice before all of this happened that when the boat was in neutral the drive shaft would still turn very slowly, I had never noticed it doing that before. I figured we would have to take it out, also having a local shop look at it. Not sure how familiar they are with it though. |

Welcome aboard. Your welcome aboard advice from me is to skip any potential headaches and send it to Eric. There's tranny's out there that go to Eric and there are tranny's that end up at Eric's. |

It could be a damper plate like Eric mentioned. Give Eric a call! If the shop says is the transmission tell them to take it out and send it. This is the best advice you will find around here. I have been on this forum for 4 years and I have seen many story and usually the only ones that ends in a happy ending is when they send them to Eric. Also, his turn around is quick, IIRC about a week.
