For a long time I've noticed that my blower seems to draw way too much power. There are a lot of times when the engine will barely turn over while the blower is on, but if I shut the blower down it cranks right up. The voltage gauge drops from 13 to 11-12 if you turn the blower on while the engine is running.
Last night I noticed that when I turned on my Navigation lights (green/red on the bow) the voltage on the gauge dropped from 13v to around 9v. The weirdest thing is that simultaneously the oil pressure and temp gauges went up roughly 20 points each. So, oil pressure went from around 50 psi to 70 psi and temp went from around 160 degrees to 180 degrees if my memory serves me correctly. Clicking the navigation light button on and off caused an instantaneous jump, so obviously oil pressure and temp were not actually changing as indicated by my gauges. What could cause this? I have a multimeter and will be glad to do any diagnostics that I can to, but I don't even know where to start with a weird electrical problem such as this. |

It's the wiring to the dash, it's undersized and old which is causing a voltage drop. Seems like there is a thread about some issue this is causing every 2 or 3 months, so there's lots of how to fix it stuff on here already. I ran an extra 10ga wire from the motor and the block ground to the dash a couple of years ago and now I see more than 12 volts at the dash with everything running.

Here's how I added a new groundon my direct drive.
Yours would most likely just need a longer wire unless you wanted to run it right to the battery instead of the engine block. TX is correct that you want to run a new positive as well. Although, for that you do need to understand the circuit a little more fully. The ground side is a little easier. Running the ground only made mine about 90% better though. |

Good to know...I'll try to search for a thread with specifics on how to correct it.

If Dylan is half as helpful with the electrical part as he was with the engine part you should have no problems.

I'll probably just tell him he has to earn his keep the next time he comes up by running new dash wires for me. Chris told one of his friends he can stay with him this weekend as long as he trims the hedges while he is there, lol.
When I first bought the boat the previous owner had a 5 Channel Kicker amp (4x85watts + 290w sub IIRC) running off the little grounding block under the dash. Needless to say I replaced that wiring. 4 Gauge from the battery with a 100A breaker. |

The stereo shouldn't be drawing anything from the dash. Maybe just the breaker that turns on the deck, (acc breaker) amps should be powered straight from the batteries. If you can't find a thread about this et me know and I'll send you some pics from my Excel.

The head unit is wired to the dash, but the amps are running on the 4 gauge wire that I installed. Why the previous owner thought he could run that amp off the tiny little grounding block is beyond me, but I fixed it very early on.
I may end up tapping that 4 Gauge as supplemental power to the dash to prevent the voltage drops I mentioned in my original post. I have distribution blocks that I can use for a clean look. |
