Hi Eric - may be better explained over the phone so let me know if you can take a call.   Everything runs out well however every now and then when I from neutral into forward as I idle out of my cove I hear some rattling noises coming from my tranny.   It goes away if I give it more rpm's.   Doesn't happen all the time - just every now and then.

It happened once down at the SJRR in March and I can't remember who I spoke to about it but they said it is common with these velvet drive transmissions.

I bring it up because it happens a little more frequently now or it may be becuase I am using my boat so much more frequently since it is now permanently on a lift at my new cabin!!!

Please advise oh masterful tranny guy,

Dave

If the damper is good, then your idle is likely not was smooth as it should be. It doesn't take much.

Adjust your idle mix screws to to get the strongest, smoothest idle while IN GEAR at 600-650 rpm. Playin with them in neutral is marginally productive.

If either screw is unresponsive, you've found your tranny noise.

Not sure I fully understand. So u believe the noise is from my engine idle being too low?   What do u mean by if the screws are unresponsive Ive found the problem.

Dave,
I'll jump in here on Tom just incase you need to get out on the lake today.

Yes, with a low idle, you can get a dampner plate rattle as well as a reverse planetary gear set rattle.

What Tom is saying about the idle mix screws is if, adjusting them doesn't change anything, then your carb is screwed up. This will produce a rough idle that aggravates the rattle.

Hey Greg. I look forward to meeting you and cant wait to see ur bfn!

I bought a place in Blairsville Ga on Lake Nottely this spring and my boat now sits comfy on a hydrahoist.

Wish I could make it this week end but unfortunately cant.   Guests are coming up.

Maybe we can meet up another time?

to understand torsionals which disappate with RPMS, at 600 rpms the plug fires with more of a duration between cylinders and are farther apart allowing time for things to bang back and forth, they are created on the powerstroke and in theory imagine a piston slowing coming up towards the sparkplug compressing air, it reaches the top and all of a sudden a stick of dynamite goes off and sends that piston at a higher speed back down towards the bottem....thats what creates torsionals....
a weak springed damper simply aggravates the noise, it doesnt remove the torsionals but it disappates them.

Thanks Eric. Understood.

So the noise I am hearing should not suggest any issues other than my timing is off and needs tweaking?

No need to worry about my tranny showing signs of wear or in need of a rebuild as of yet?

I will say it pulls nice. No slipping.   Just that noise ar idle and when put in gear from time to time.

Oh. And it really just started since I dropped in the Pertronics electronic ignition. I need to get the timing light out too!

Threadjack:

Eric, i'm at the shop and some guys are bringing a brand new Super Air 210 for start up, no fluids in the boat, PCM suggest a fully synthetic mobile 50 oil, wont dexron work there? (for the PCM power vee)

the guy was told to use transmission fluid from the Nautique factory.

update
pulled the dipstick on the unit, it was dexron in it, does it have oone only or is it two separates units as the Indmars?
got to check better as the Mobile 1 stuff as it's not easily available down here
