I run my boats in water with a lot of calcium in it and my manifolds are full of little hardened calcium flakes. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on how to get it all cleaned out of them? I thought I heard someone say something about boiling them out one time, or I was also thinking about soaking them in some kind of vinegar or lime away. Let me know what ya'll think??? Thank you

I have seen manifolds and risers used in salt water cleaned out in muriatic acid to get rid of rust, you just build a box line it with plastic and submerge them.I would think you could do the same with sometning like limeaway or clr.

Nick,
When you mentioned "boiling", You're probably talking about the good old days of the caustic hot tank where many an engine block would go. Those have pretty much disappeared due to the GD EPA!! So, one thing you did not state if if you truly have a cooling problem?? No cooling issue - no problem!!!! What temps are the manifolds running at? Did you IR scan them? |

Oh yeah I'm having some cooling issues!!! The first time I had a burned head gasket between number 3 and 4 cylinder and a cracked head. Did all my back breaking work and finally found another GT40 head and put it all back on ran it for about 8 to 10 hours total engine time and no compression in number 2,3,4, cylinder. The temp gauge on boat was working showing 160 all the time and Cylinders 4 though 8 are fine and cool as cucumbers. I'm either thinking its a fuel rail blockage causing it to run real lean over there or my manifold? So I'm going through the whole thing just to make sure I don't smoke another head. THank you guys for all your advice I really like this site!!

Oh yeah my machine shop guy had the new head in his shop 4 days before said no cracks and when I took it back he found 9 cracks in it!! So something is getting really hot and I don't have a IR scan but I will have one the next time we fire this bad boy up.

maybe the block cooling passages are blocked and some areas get hotter than others.
