We are so sick of these damn things...
Have tried many techniques to get rid of them but are getting fed up! They are huge wasps that dig in our front yard build sand castles and sleep/nest in the holes at night. Tried spray, tried ammonia in the holes, tried covering the holes with clear cake pans so they think they have a shot at life and don't dig another way out and then starve...nothing works! Going to Theisens today to pick up some, anything to kill these ba5tards. Ugh they're annoying! I might try some TNT |

I have had the type that drill a perfect 3/8" hole in the facial of the soffet of my free standing garage. Approx 18 holes across the two bays. I flooded them with a spray and filled the holes with plastic wood and it solved the problem for over a year. This tear it appears I have one or two and have been too busy to attend to them. I don't know about the ground ones other than a spray product, but I do understand your frustration.

Yea we had some on the side of the house (we have a rock style brick) that build like dirt tubes right on the house. Had to spray them with the hose and they haven't rebuilt...yet...

I don't know if you can stil get the stuff or if the EPA has banned it but I have an old bottle of Ortho Clorodain (sp?). You mix it with water and use a sprinklig can to soak the ground. Many an ant hill in my lawn has been taken care of with the stuff!!!

I have used powdered insectaside, pronounced sevin, but not sure of the exact spelling. You put it in the entrance on a cool evening when there is no activity, they crawl trhough it and spread it around, killing the whole hive. very effective in one or two days. Nothing more satisfiying. (OK not many things anyway.)

sevin dust!! tried that last night I think, didn't use as much as we probably should have because it just didn't look like it'd actually work.
TNT might be looking like the best option here. We could also wait till they get out for the fall but I'd like to make sure they'd never come back! I'd take the spiders they eat before these eagle sized bees. |

Def not EPA approved ~ but a 1/2 quart of unleaded and a match around 2 am usually does the trick.
On a more enviro note a heavier then air / oxy displacing gas might kill them off silently with out the grand fireworks show. |

I had these things too a few years back and used an insect killer that you attach to the hose. You saturate the yard at night and it should take care of it.
Last week we were cruising down the lake and hit a few wakes and this terd looking brown thing fell from under the gunnel and landed on the carpet. The kids were all laughing and saying the boat took a crap, but it was a mud dobber nest! When I got home I ran the shop vac up under all the gunnels and found a few more. THey were really old, from before the restoration. Nice... |

I never knew what a "mud dobber" was until l I got the Tique up here. I bought the boat in the Indy area and the things don't seem to get up into the Chicago area. I found several of their nests under the gunnels!!! BTW, I'm with Micheal on the idea of several gals. of gas!! 
BTW, I just pulled out the old glass pint I still have of the Ortho product. It's "ORTHO-KLOR 74 Chorodane" Sometimes it pays to save those old bottles!! Now, i'd bet I'd have a hard time of getting rid of it!! Walk into a disposal center and they would direct me to go elsewhere!!
