I'm considering putting a tower on my '79 Ski Nautique over the off season and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for towers? I've heard a lot of good stuff about Monster Towers but I'm not crazy about the look of them.

I'm really struggling with this decision. I want the tower but I'm not sure that I want to drill holes in my '79 and corrupt it's classic look.

Get an extended pylon (Skylon) Same functionality, can even get board rack for them, fraction of the cost, and only minutes to slip on or off. Preserve the look of your boat, put no holes in it.

If you don't need a collapsible tower the Joystick universal is square enough to look like it belongs on an older SN. It is also reasonably priced at $895.

I don't care what anybody says but towers give a much better and stable pull than a highpole. I have used both extensively and I would never go back to a highpole.

Highpoles also take up plenty of room in a boat, even with racks.

If you wakeboard exclusively get a tower and racks and be done with it. If you want to restore the boat one day just get the 8 small screw holes filled and repaired professionaly.

I have a great picture of a 79 SN with a tower that looks period correct. I got a quote on the stainless and it was around $450.00 Towers are 2,400 I think I could buy the material, welder, pipe bender and hdwr. for less. Plenty of time on the off season

Awhite,

I'm not familiar with towers specifically on
a 79. You might check with newdimensiontowers.com to see if they are making a FCT knockoff for that model.

Monster and bigairpylons.com seem to be the low cost choices in towers right now. Bigair's is only $895. I like the monsters, but agree they look kind of big on the older boats.

I like the Boss towers, but they do get pricey.
Some others to check out:
13th Floor towers
Samsonsports.com
Proflight towers
xtremetowers.com

I originally was thinking about an extended pylon but I was concerned about the pylon flexing.

Even with the cables to the bow of the boat to absorb the load of the pull the cable can not absorb much of the lateral load (side to side) that you would get during a cut. I'd be afraid too much torque would be transferred to the factory pylon.

A pylon has to be firmly preloaded for it to perform, and flex is quite managable.

A custom two-cable system that triagulated the side loads perhaps 15 degees to each side of the bow would control the side loads much better than a single-cable system down the center.

I am attempting to build a few....one for my 80 SN. It will be similar to the trend that the mastercraft x-star tower and many other boats are doing. The towers these days seem to start in front of the windsheild and continue all the way to the middle or slightly past the middle of the boat. I have plenty of aluminum 2.5" aluminum tubing, but I am trying to get some good looking mounting hardware made which does include clamps for speakers etc. We will see how it turns out. Any help with finding hardware ideas is appreciated. Currently I am working with a machine shop, but I am hoping for a cheaper solution.

How do the Skylon posts fit over the ring on the original pylon?

They do not. Depending up what year boat your have, some have a pin, which you can knock out, and then the ring can be removed (twists out). Some people simply cut the rings off, but the thought of that, personally, makes me cringe. The only high pole I am awar of which mounts to the pylon with ring intact is flite-pipe. This pole mounts alongisde existing pylon rather than slippling over it.
