When I make the rudder straight at the back of the boat and then turn it to the left it will only go 1 1/4+ turn and to the right it will go 1 3/4+ turn. The steering wheel isn't straight when the rudder is straight. Is there any way to adjust the steering so it turns the same from left to right and make the steeering wheel sit straight?

Yes. loosen the clamp holding the steering cable tube to the cable block. Center the steering wheel from lock to lock. If the wheel is not straight when center lock to lock, then remove it and reposition (only if splined shaft).
Now straighten rudder by hand (make sure steering wheel does not move). Tighten tube clamp on steering block. Mark the clamp on the tube with a Sharpie. Go for a test drive. Not position of steering wheel when going straight. If wheel not centered, then make small adjustments to the position of the tube in the clamp until you get it right. The mark will serve as a reference point for adjustment. |

David,
Thanks for the information. Since I'm not familiar with the steering system where is the "steering cable tube" and "cable block"? |

Both are located near the tiller arm (i.e. rudder). Let's see...you have a '79, so the center portion of the floor just aft of the motor box is removable after you remove the motor box, rear seat (if applicable) and rear panel. Unscrew and remove and remove the center floor section. You will immediately see the steering cable that is held to the port (left) stringer with the "clamp block" It is the "steering tube" that is held by the clamp block. This is what I am talking about.
The rudder tiller arm will be located under the fuel tank. This is a good time to check the packing of the rudder/rudder port. |
