Looking at a boat, has over 500 hours on it and the 2nd owner says he added a heat exchanger before it was used in salt water. 1st owner let it sit for 3 years before 2nd owner bought it about 7 years ago. Runs good. The A/T is leaking between the Tranny and bell housing. Any advice would be appreciated as to purchasing the boat or asking owner specific questions.

The hours are nothing to worry about. That's really on the low side.
The statement "removed the heat exchanger before it was used in brackish water." seems counter-intuitive to me. A cooling system with a heat exchanger, also known as closed cooling system, also known as "fresh water cooled" (vs Raw or Lake water cooled) is meant to protect the engine internals from salt water. So, why remove it when going in salt water? To protect the heat exchanger? This part is meant to be relatively disposable to protect the engine. That's like saying, I normally wear a condom, but when I sleep with prostitutes, I remove the condom because I don't want the condom to get damaged. It's not automatically a deal breaker, I'm just wondering if the owner has his story straight. Always worth having the boat checked out by someone qualified. |

I don´t understand why he removed the heat exchanger if he was to use the boat in brackish/salt water? isn´t it there for that purpose?
from the picture the close cooling is all there... So basically if he removed the heat exchanger salt water has gone through the engine...someone correct me if I´m wrong...if properly flushed after each use its probably not so bad though. On the leaking tranny, its probably the shaft seal that went bad...not sure they tend to leak cause they are old, or means other problems.... |

Haha.
Kap, the transmission obviously has to come out to do any kind of service on it tho, right? You have more experience with this. At least, in the states, you can send the Trans to Eric for a full re-furb. I wouldn't say this is deal breaker either, if it's a nice boat, just make sure that's reflected in the price. |

Should I have the owner take it to a correct craft dealer in the area or have a marine surveyor do it. My cost of course.
I think the owner might not know what he was talking about with the heat exchanger. What would you remove if your boat was going to spend 2 years in brackish water? |

Is there a dealer relatively close to where the boat is located? It's funny, when I hear Marine Surveyor, I always think about large boats. You could call a dealer close to where the boat is located, and see if they have someone they use or if they have someone in house that goes out into the field if the boat can't be brought to the dealer.

It's probably the front seal on the trans and it's not a hard job to do. Pulling the trans is pretty straightforward, and once you get it on a bench it's a matter of pulling the pump cover on the trans and driving out the seal, driving the new one in. If you're somewhat handy with a wrench I'd estimate 4hrs labor, start to finish.

Yes, its like M3 said, its very easy to replace the front seal, if your handy....You only must to extract the seal with some pointed object, been careful of not scratch the aluminum wall of the trans. and replace it with a new one. the goal is that the new one fits straight in the housing, and it could be made with a some kind of tube with smooth end. Or how bri said...Eric could do a full revision of the transmission, allways is good to do that to avoid further troubles.....If one seal fail, most likely the others need be replaced too.....

I have nothing to add to this conversation other than this statement from Brian could possibly be the best analogy I have seen posted here. Ever. Awesome. Mike |

I am sorry, he did say he added it before the exposure to salt. I went ahead and edited the OPost. This is the FL boat in question.http://correctcraftfan.com/forsale/details.asp?ID=6067&sort=&pagenum=1 |

I have forgotten to mention that before put the new seal, you must lubricate the shaft, be carefull of not scratch the seal inner edge with the shaft splines, and put some seal adhesive in the housing...

Hey guys, the second owner didn't REMOVE the heat exchanger, he ADDED it BEFORE operating it in salt.
Please re-read the first sentence in the OP in order that proper advice can be given.... |

I changed the first sentence so that it makes sense.( I misunderstood the owner) The thread replies are correct responses to my typing "DID REMOVE", so I edited the OP. Apologies for the confusion. |
