After 16 years the plywood and carpet have gone away and been replaced with diamond plate. The next project is to add some casters to the prop guard and then strip and paint the trailer

I really like the tread plate. Were are you at in NC, I might know a place that could help with the strip and paint if you are going to contract it out. Allen, in Winston Salem

Looks great. What thickness of diamond plate did you use? Did you cut it with a jig saw? I've been planning to do the same to my 95 trailer this year.

A carbide tipped blade in a hand held "skill saw" for the straight cuts does wonders on aluminum.

On previous post someone used 1/8 inch diamond plate. I hope that is thick enough.

When measuring tread plate by inches, the thickness includes the tread. So 1/8" tread plate will be closer to 1/16" thick sheet raised to around 1/8" where the tread are. Now it is possible that who ever posted they were using 1/8" tread plate that they did not measure the sheet they had at the tread, which give them 1/4" tread.
1/4" tread plate is very durable, I have used 1/4" and 3/16" on most of the aluminum projects I have worked on from refurbishing fire engines and building custom aluminum dog boxes for trucks. |

How much is needed to do a single axle trailer (i.e 4x8foot sheet)? Is Mcmaster the best place to get it or would local shops carry (trailer shop, auto shop, other???).
My carpet/wood needs replacing and I like the looks of the diamondplate and don't need to worry about it ever again... Thanks Ron |

I would imagine if you could get it local it would save a bit to not have to ship.

Really? So, you don't have a TIG to weld it together?? |

Why would you have to weld it?

I did not weld mine - simply butted over an existing support. I am 260#'s and the plate is solid. A recommended betterment for sure

Matt, When you mentioned the 10' sheet of diamond plate needed, I thought you were going to get elaborate and go beyond just the stepping areas. |

Since the diamond plate comes in 4 x 8 and 4 x 10 sheets I'm going to get the 4 x 10's and then I can cut both steps out of one sheet. The step area on a 95 Ramlin is over 8ft. Long. I know that because I replaced the plywood last year. But now I think the alum is the way to go.
