I purchased a used 94SN last summer, and the steering is extremely stiff. Likely it needs a new cable. The steering wheel is fine, but I have to disconnect the stern end of the cable to test the rudder. It looks like the connection is under the gas tank. Do I need to remove the gas tank to disconnect the cable, or can it be accomplished without removing the gas tank?

You shouldn't have to remove the gas tank, but you might have to remove your back seat. The whole operation will be easier if you remove your doghouse, the rear seat, and the floor panel behind the doghouse.

You shouldn't need to remove the fuel tank to replace the cable. Try turning the rudder all the way to one side and see if the connection doesn't move into a more managable location.

Just takes a little "boat mechanic's yoga" to get to the tiller arm just as Bri said.. I believe it's a 1/2" nut on one side and 9/16" on the other side to disconnect the tiller from the cable end.

Should be able to reach the tiller arm connection without removing the gas tank.
I would recommend attaching a small, sturdy rope to the end of (the tiller end)the steering cable when you remove it. Then pull the new cable in from the helm after attaching it to the rope. It is easier with two people. One to pull from the stern and one to feed the new cable into the pipe under the dash. |

Thanks to all. It is out after doing some "boat mechanic's yoga."
I don't think this is the original setup. The P/N on the cable reads "SSC12419 Teleflex 081201" which might indicate the present cable was made in 2001. Also, in several places I've read that the 94 SN original cable was 19.5'. Any thoughts on this? |

I ordered mine from a CC dealer just to make sure it was the correct one.

Unfortunately there is no CC dealer nearby. This is MasterCraft territory, with the factory only an hour away. I'll probably just order the 19' cable as it presently has, rather than the 20' cable which some other sources have suggested is an acceptable substitute.

There was some shuffling of cable sizes around your era of boat. At one point, the original cable wasn't available, so if the cable was changed, they would have had to change the helm too. If you have a part number of your old one, and you can find a new one of that number, and the range of steering worked for you, you might as well go for it.
If you want to go OEM, click on this link, and then make sure you read the illustrations on all the pictures. It helps you determine which cable you should get: http://www.nautiqueparts.com/steeringcableallnautiquesfrom1993to1997.aspx |

There are several reliable sources to order from. You can get the cable in 2 to 3 days. Try My Correct Craft Parts, N3 Boatworks or White Lake Marine. You can order on line and have the right part quickly.

In the end I ordered the cable from boatsplus.com, and picked it up in Chattanooga yesterday. With tax it was $135.
Installation was a snap. Very clean and easy. Thanks to all who assisted in this project. |
