Get the trailer tires! I think they are ST205/75R15. They will tow better.

I have also heard that if you get a blowout and lose the boat or just damage it, without the "Trailer Rated" tires, some insurance companies won't belly up and cover the damage. It's not worth the risk. Get trailer tires they are made for hauling.

The 2001 trailers changed styles in 1983. I *believe* the early ones came with 14" wheels and tires. The later (delux) ones came with 15". Those take 225/75/15. Go with trailer tires. Get the highest load ratings possible. |

I went with Goodyear Marathon TRAILER tires on my 2001 trailer a few years ago and have been VERY pleased with them. They ride good and the last time when I took them in for a balance Kauffman tire said, " Keep doing whatever your doing cause these things look great!"

Ive had several sets of Goodyear Marathons and have had good luck as well. Though, if you search the internet, GY supposedly had trouble with them the past few years. Lots of bad reviews for Carlisles too. Pretty much everything is now made in China... I would say that its a total crap shoot as to who is making good quality trailer tires these days.
I think the safest bet is to find a local tire shop and buy from them. That way if you have issues, you have a better chance at getting them replaced under some kind of warranty. Always watch your tire pressure (usually recommended to keep it at 50+ psi) and carry a spare! |

I have had the Marathons as well on the 85' single axle and have been really pleased. Just last week I put new Carlisle radials on the 99 tandem axle. Just like Tim said, I had read many bad reviews about just about every trailer tire out there. You never hear in those reviews those about who didn't have their tire pressures where they should be. So my advice is to do what you can to maintain your tires, and just keep an eye on them no matter what brand. Low pressure will kill a trailer tire in a hurry.

I'm running Carlisle 205's on my trailer, and have had extremely excellent luck.
Had a spare pair of 205 Goodyear Marathons, in which one came apart just sitting, not even on the trailer. I should have taken a pic. It looked really nasty with the big bubble and the twisted tread about to fall off. |

I've used most everything out there on the work trailers, I've also seen most of them blow apart and have issues. The only thing I have noticed is that they seem to last about 4 years before they become questionable, and usually if you loose one then the others follow along shortly, sometimes on the same trip. I keep track and just prepare to spend the money that 4th year so its not a big dent in the budget. Someone suggested balancing them which I've done on the boat trailer, I haven't had them done long enough to make the call on wheather or not it helps.
I've had the best luck with Michelin LTX's on a tandem dual, they aren't trailer tires but I got almost 10 years out of them. You do expect that though at $200 x 8. |

never go cheap on trailer tires---you will pay. get radials. I am running the goodyear marathons and they do ride nice and smooth and trailer straight and true, get them balanced, its only 10-15 more apiece and the smoothness and even wear is worth it.

Not on a trailer but last fall I decided to change brands on a new set of tires for my 2500 Suburban. I went with the LTX A/T 2's and have been very pleased with them. I had to go up north for a short weekend in January and did not bother with having my driveway plowed. They got me through the plowed snow off the highway and up hill with 24" of snow on the ground. This included 18" of week old snow. When I opened the drivers door, it actually pushed snow out of it's way! At least I only had to buy 4 of the tires!
