Tachometer Repair

Hi everyone. Long time no see. Got a question.

My boat is a 75 Skier, OMC equipped engine. My tachometer is on the blink. It was on the blink in June of 2010 after my stringer rebuild but I have never addressed it. I checked out the connections that a couple of members suggested and everything appears ok.

I am having my brother apparently use a dwell meter to check it out one day next week. If the tachometer is bad(its the original one), can anyone suggest a place anywhere in the country I can send it to and have it rebuilt to working order? Not interested in replacing it with a new one(keep it original, right Pete? .

Any suggestions are welcome.

Thanks Pete. Talked with Dale. Love the WI accent........."DA Bears" like in the Geico commercial. Oh well, I thought it was funny.

Anyway, he could work on it but he said those Teleflex MK27 Tachs are the hardest ones to fix. He said they are so delicate, he just puts another set of guts in them rather than try and fix what's wrong. I told him it was working briefly after my stringer rebuild then stopped. It came on one more time that week and not sence then. He believes that since I had just about every wire in that boat apart at one time or another doing the rebuild, it most likely is problem with a wire or the "pin" may have been moved from the 8-cylinder position to a 6 or 4 position. Have not looked back there lately so not sure what this looks like. Anyway, I may check or try and replace wires and then see if it works before I check out the tach with the meter.

Any other direction I need to go?

I'm glad to hear you like Dale's accent!! At least he's not from Minnesota. Check the wiring harness plug at the engine. I've found them to get real green inside! The male is easy to clean with some scotch brite but the female is harder. I usually will go inside it with a wire brush on a Dremel. Dielectric grease and see what happens.

You tach should have different wires for the sender depending on the number of engine cylinders. I don't remember ever seeing a selection switch for 4,6 or 8.
