My 83 Southwind coughs and sputters and dies when accelerating, idles rough. It has 241 orininal hours on it.
I would like to change the set up for the fuel filter from the original to a spin-on for sake of ease and have the unit ready to go. My quandry is maintence and expense. A cenral Kentucky dealer charges over $1,000 for a tune up and problem solving. $100 plus for an oil change. Is it ethical for me to ask and if so I would like some recommendations on people and shops that are trustworthy and affordable, not out to cover the multimillion overhead. The boat is used infrequently but when I want to go " I want to go"! Wick |

83....two things.
#1. Don't use that dealer again ! Your getting hosed big time by that dealer. #2. Learn to do the basics yourself! I would guess that what you are commenting about(coughs, sputters Etc)...are things you can easily do yourself.... Oil change is a ten minute job...dealer is charging $600.00 per hour minus cost of oil($10.00). Tune up on your boat might cost you $100 -$200.00 depending on if you need to buy any parts and tools. Basic tune up...carb adjusting, spark plugs (maybe a set of wires)...points ,rotor and cap...and setting timing. All of that is very do-able for anyone...even if you are not a backyard mechanic! If you want to try....we can guide you through the process! |

83; Agree with stang, RUN don't walk away from that dealer as fast as possible. Better yet, post that crooks name here for our KY bros. I used to do my own winterizing myself, do my own oil and tune-ups. These boats are very easy to work on. There is lots of posts here to help, just use the "search". Get a manual for your boat or look up one here. You'll get lots of satisfaction and you'll know that your boat is always ready to go. Extra benefit; your wife will always know where you're at when you're out in the garage..........john

I agree with everyone! Plus like said before, it will save you big $ and probably could even afford to have another boat after that..
