hello everyone!

this is my first post here. been browsing the forum for a while now and I can't believe all the info. a real gold mine.

Ok so I bought my 86 SN about 2 months ago (my first boat).

yesterday I started the winterization process and filled the engine with antifreeze.

the guy I bought it from told me to first drain the water before running antifreeze in the engine.

after I was done, I realized I forgot the draining operation...

after thinking about it, I guess I don't really understand why do so since, in the end, I collected about 1 gallon of antifreeze in 2 buckets underneath the exhausts. so I assume the cooling system must be full of antifreeze.

is there a risk of not draining first?

do you guys drain first? if so what is the benefit?!

just looking for some comfort here!!

thanks

86 SN and lovin' it!

That is how we do the flat head motors or motors with out thermostats. We also have a customer that did it that way with a modern 318 and never got it up to temp with held slot of water in the block.......... New manifolds and New freez plugs in the block

Bob - You need to start over & drain 1st. Most likely you did not get all the water out. You can just pour the AF in, no need to run engine.

I agree with Chris^. Start over - drain and pour. The T stat does NOT need to be removed nor does the engine need to be warmed up to open the T stat. The antifreeze will enter the block through the bottom block ports.

Welcome to CCfan. How about posting some pictures of the boat?

The block was full of water and the anti-freeze poured in would just go out the exhaust manifolds wouldn't it? You would get a small amount of antifreeze in the block, don't know how cold it's supposed to get in Charlotte this winter, but I sure wouldn't risk it over spending 15 minutes to do it right.

Two general assumptions that I see people get wrong on a regular basis are that 1. the T-stat needs to be open to let fluid into the engine and that 2. the exhaust is the "end of the line", such that if something is coming out of the exhaust it must have circulated through the entire motor. Both are incorrect.

There's a mini reunion just up the road from you this weekend on Lake Norman in Mooresville at Pinkham Point and your already winterizing it?

Bring the boat out and play with us this weekend and we'll show you how to winterize it on Sunday.

Welcome to CCFan!

ok thanks for the valuable info. will redo per your advice.

I found it takes about 3 gallons on another winterization thread and I will shoot for this.

I guess the only confirmation I'd like to have now is that I need to use this hose to fill her up.

It's a shame for the meetup this weekend but I can't attend. I am leaving for Asia for almost 3 weeks on Friday and this is why I wanted to close the prestone deal before I left.

I filled the diaries section and I think it worked, anyway here are a couple pix of my new girlfriend!

Nice looking boat!!
I love the looks of that tower on the boat and how it follows the lines of your windshield...

Can anyone tell me what brand it is? Or is it custom made?

I think its a razor tower...http://tricktowers.com/1752.html

I found it through a old link on ww http://www.wakeworld.com/forum/showthread.php?t=519626 the only difference I can see are the mounts.

I think it looks pretty cool, but towers discussions are best left to other websites rather than on CCF

Francois,
That is the correct hose to pour the antifreeze in. You are using the RV type correct? Did you find all the drains? There are 5 on the engine. 1 on each side of the block. 1 on each exhaust manifold and 1 in the J pipe next to the water pump. Don't forget to drain the trans cooler.

I and several other members have equipped their drains with these removable stem drain cocks. I put them on all my boats. The stem being removable allows you to still probe the drain with a piece of wire to make sure it's not plugged with sediment. McMaster has them up to 3/8" pipe size so reducing bushings are needed on the manifolds.

thanks

well I originally used green prestone but now I got the pink stuff at west marine today. I drained the prestone and collected it in buckets underneath both exhausts.

before I drained it, I noticed some of if ended in the bilge. I cleaned everyting on sunday after I was done pouring it in. so where should I look for the leak? is there a more likely leak path? it's been only 4 days and some leaked...

yes I found the 5 drain locations but the manifold brass plugs tricked me, as I was expecting using a allen key to unscrew for some reason.

looks like half inch square, can you use a 1/2" drive ratchet without socket? I guess I'll finish up the draining operation tomorrow!!

I also removed the impeller. do you think it's still good to go or should I replace it?

and for you guys curious about the tower, the guy said he made it himself, arm not included!

Francois,
Even though the old impeller would work for some more hours, as long as you have it out, get a new one.

On the leak, the first place I would look at is the trans cooler. They are pretty thin copper and they do break. Did you remove the hose(s) or some do have a drain plug in them. If it does have the drain plug, we don't even recommend using it. They break off pretty easy. Disconnecting the hose is a better option.

Yes, a 1/2" ratchet works on the manifold drains.

Another tip - The green auto AF & pink RV AF do not like each other & will congeal into goo if mixed.

Make sure & get all the green out if you are switching to pink.

If you're getting a new impeller, then keep that old one! It looks pretty good.

I did remove the lower hose. So I found this replacement part.

http://www.nautiqueparts.com/coolertransmissionoilpcmfordengines-5longbarrelland1inletandoutlet.aspx

what should I check on the existing cooler before getting a new one? connection leak? sheet metal cracks? it's still 70$ so if there's a way to confirm it leaks (or doesn't), I'd like to check it out first.

Bob - Take out the cooler, plug 1 end of water circuit & pressurize into the other end with 5 PSI of air pressure. Use hoses & clamps, etc for plugging.

Put it underwater, oil ports down (so they don't fill with water) & wait for bubbles. No bubbles after 2 minutes - you have a good cooler.

By you removing the hose. You did it the correct way.

I think there was some confusion above.

On this site, we recommend removing the hose, and not removing the tranny cooler drain plug. That tranny cooler drain plug is the vulnerable part.

Inspect the ends of your tranny cooler, where the hose would normally go over. Mainly because a past over-tightening of the hose clamp cold damage it. If it's fine, your cooler is fine, unless you had other indications otherwise.
