this boating stuff. I just stumbled upon this picture of my dad, I am guessing from the mid to late 1940s of him chillin' in an old woody.

Must be where I got it from too Larry. My Dad taught me to ski on the Huron River when I was 10 or 12. Friend of his, Bud Wick, had a small runabout with twin 45 Mercs. Boy did we think that boat was cool. Then my brother Bill really got me hooked while I was still in high school when he bought his first boat and discovered the WSWSC. Rest is history as they say. Wish I had a pic of my Dad like that one you've got. Very very cool.

Very cool pic' Larry...and a very cool looking Dad! Yep John...1st boat was the old '65 Lone Star with a roarin' 75hp Johnson. I was going to post a picture which I managed to get scanned but it has been ages since I used photobucket and they have made changes to their site. Bottom line...no luck getting it moved there so I could upload to site. Winter is coming so there will be more time to practice! |

I've posted this video before (I believe in BKH's "first boat" thread) but it was a long time ago. Reposting in response to Bill and John reminiscing about how they got started with boating and skiing. This goes back to 1960ish and my start. http://s16.photobucket.com/albums/b24/lhine763/?action=view¤t=oldboats_0001.mp4 (Bill you are right, Photobucket changed and as is typical, for the worse. Don't know why software and website people have to mess with a good thing. You have an option to revert to the old photobucket (and teh ability to tell them why. I d*cked around with it quite a while last night trying to reduce the size of the photo above and had to give up and go a different route.) |

Really cool picture Larry. Was the boat in your family?
I don't have any pictures, but I have a trophy that my grandfather received for winning 1st place in a boat race on Rangley Lake in 1918. I have no idea what kind of boat it was, but the story he always told was he rented the boat and filled the gas tank with ether. I'm surprised that trick hasn't come up on CCF. |

That is a great picture Larry, but in your Dad's defence it wasn't an old woody at the time
Bruce there is a story in our family that my great uncle, who was a pilot, brought home some avgas in the 30's and ruined a good Evinrude with it. I hope your Grandfather had bought the "Damage waver" insurance on the rental |

Have you guys seen the movie "Madison" about hydroplane racing in the early 1970s? They were blowing those things up on a pretty regular basis. Good movie.
Bruce's story reminds me of other stories told on here that typically have a line something like "hey, hold my beer and watch this." |

Well, they did take a lot of poetic license with that movie, but nonetheless it's one of my favorites. One of those that I will have to watch if I find it while flipping channels. BKH |

I have a very cool photo of me and you in the Lone Star but it is in the book Sharon & you made me from Mom's old pics. Would hate to try to take it out & mess it up. Just went & looked at it again tonight...geez we look young! Know what else I'd like to see? Got a pic scaned of the Slickcraft?
Last time I can remember Dad on skis was..I think..the first time we went to Lake James in 1963. On 2 skis. I remember 'cause we had that light green chevy 4 door. Did you ever pull him? john |

My father summer of 1976 on Lake Lanier. Boat was an Aristocraft with the sliding roof and a Mercruiser stern drive. It belonged to one of dad's friends. Dad passed away the following year in the fall of '77.
One of my favorite pictures of him. |

Bruce, I asked my Aunt (my dad's little sister, now 85) If she had any recollections. She thought it was their dad's (my grandfather's) boat and that the picture may have been taken around 1950 in Hollywood florida. I knew my grandparents wintered for years down in florida and that for many of those years he kept a woody inboard down there (I recall some old videos I am going to try to track down.) That looks more like upstate NY than Hollywood FL to me though, so even if they did have their inboard in FL as early as 1950, I am not sure that is what this is of. |

John: Thanks to Larry and his advice to go back to the original photobucket I have managed to scan pictures of both the Lone Star and the Slickcraft and have them at photobucket. Now I just have to remember [or get Brandi to help] how to get them attached to my CCF post. Stand by...will get it eventually!! |

Hi Jim, great photo. Gotta love the Aristocraft!, great hull design. Sheriff Patrol used 'em on our lake in NY for years. Sliding hardtop great feature for their use in NY, can't imagine it as a plus here in GA. |

Jeff, yes there were a lot of Aristocrafts running around "back in the day".
In fact, the first boat I ever skiid behind was an Aristocraft (not the one pictured above). It was Easter weekend on Lanier. An early Easter in late March. I was determined to get on skis. It was COLD....and it was FUN. That hardtop came in handy that cloudy, cold day. That picture above was taken in the late summer of '76. That is the summer I worked at Lanier Harbor Marina on Lanier. They were a new Correct Craft dealer. Managed by a close family friend. That was my first introduction to Correct Craft and the Ski Nautique. That is when my love affair with these boats began. |

On a side note. The son of the Aristocraft owner has a shop about four miles from my house. His name is Billy Turner. He restores, and I think, artistically creates new wooden Aristocraft boats in his shop. His wife, Gail Turner, grew up on my street. Her cousin John is my best freind. Gail is the former president of the ACBS Int'l.

Father and Grandfather sure look alike. Same hair line on them 2 guys. Lucky me and you got Mom's hair..not Dad's!
as to photobucket; I am not having any trouble getting my pics on but they do seem to be larger than before & I don't know how to resize. Will wait on the Slickcraft pic. Wish I could get the one out of me & you on the Lone Star..its a hoot. Couple of nice pics in that group..one of me, you & Kathie (!) sitting at a picnic table that I have no idea where we were. Early ski club trip I'd guess. But where? john |
