not to thread jack here but .. on mid coast maine the shacks are on tidal bays/rivers. one of my friends i grew up with was at the time an urchin diver and was always good for a laugh. he was in a shack with 2 or 3 others and stuck his head through the hole and could see light from a neighboring shack. he stripped naked lowered himself in the water and swam to the next hole .popped up and pretty near gave the old guys a heart attack. got out shook off and ran back to his shack..

The shacks can be a wonder of engineering, some very professional but many the work of a guy with a beer in one hand and a welder in the other. The simple versions have the tires mounted on an arm. As a winch pulls on one arm the axle rotates raising and lowering the frame off the ice. Some are more complicated.

Others are fixed and they pile snow around the bottom. Some just slide on wooden skids from shore to the fishing spot.

All are subject to freezing to the ice. Removal is the funnest part.

why not just build a rectangle box with no top or bottom and slide it down to meet the ice .it could be just smaller than the hole in the floor .

Easy for you to think like that huh? Seven months of that cold crap freezes your brain i think.

Great idea. I am just saying given so many months of the cold
it is easy to over think the solution.

Glad to say, ice drinking is no longer a part of my vocabulary, except when i describe it to some native floridian.

I am sure its been done. Its not really my sport, but you can't live here and not hear about it. A few thoughts.

1. Floor temp. Ice stays around 30 degrees. Minnesota air regularly hits overnight -10 or lower in January and February.

2 Average hand powered ice auger can drill to 48 inches, but at full depth you operating it inches above your standing surface. Minnesota ice gets to 24" or more, add 18" for axle clearance, suspension and floor height and you performing your hole drilling work 6 inches off the floor.

3. There is also the need to scoop slush and such from the hole so your bait will drop through (I have seen many do this using bare fingers for the "scoop" Others use what looks to be a round slotted spoon device) It is no fun to do this lying on your belly, although a long handled slush scoop would remedy this.

For every solution there is a new problem.

for # 1 I have no answer
for #2 drill before you park it then pull the trailer over it?
for# 3 extended strainer is probably the best solution

#1 Move south and fish from a boat! Then you don't have to worry about 2 and 3.
