I've poured through a few much older threads and need some advice on the topic of carpet weight. I am almost to the point of putting carpet down in my 1993 project. The boat originally came with 28 oz. carpet, but from what I can tell that weight is just not made any longer. I got a few samples from Marine Carpeting and here's what I discovered:

The 24 oz. Granite Gray is nearly an exact match for what's in my boat now. But, even old 28 oz. carpet is noticeably more plush and soft than new 24 oz. carpet.

The 40 oz. Fossil carpet is wonderfully plush and a very close color to the original. But, I'm very concerned about parts fitting in the boat with thicker carpet. I'm concerned that the battery box, cooler lids, etc. won't fit with the thicker carpet.

What should I do?

Are you sure that's what the boat came with "originally"?

The 93 brochure says 28 oz carpet is standard.
For thousands of years men have felt the irresistible urge to go to sea, and many of them died. Things got better after they invented boats.

I've never done this but if the battery box and parts like that don't fit with 40oz carpet, maybe you could trim some of the excess carpet off the edges with scissors. Would take a little more work to make it fit right but having a very plush carpet that you enjoy standing on may make it work it.

John - I'm thinking along similar lines. Maybe a little trimming here and there and I could have the plush carpet.

Yes, I am sure that 28 oz. carpet was original, and I am sure that what I am comparing carpet pieces to is also original. What surprises me is how different the CC original carpet feels compared to the sample piece. It is 4 oz. different.

Corinthian has a 32oz that comes in grey or tan, that's the closest I've found, haven't gotten a sample though to be sure.

I'm leaning twords something a little less plush that doesn't hold as much water myself.   I'm not sure when, but ive got some mold that seems to appear once a year or so and Makes the boat smell like a wet dog. Im thinking something a little thinner would dry quicker or at least could be changed out without spending a fortune.
I've had fairly good luck with the cheap stuff from Lowe's. I used it in the last boat and have it on the divider behind the back seat where I robbed the stock carpet to cover the sub.

This problem has come up before. I believe it was JINY that said he would never again install the plusher carpet since it takes so long to dry.

All cc's 2004 and forward use 40oz carpet. Honestly, I can't tell the difference between the 28oz I put in my 90 and the 40oz- both in terms of plushness and water retention. Both are thick. A lot thicker than the 16oz stuff that came standard in the late 80's and early 90's. I don't think you'll run into issues getting 40oz to go where 28oz was. Get some samples from marinecarpeting.com, they'll have something that matches. I believe the original color was "gunmetal".

I've seen 28oz carpets on line. In fact I'm buying it for my 73 Naugtique. I'll look it up and give you the address if your still looking. Wayne

My 20 oz. was not all that plush/thick. I cannot imagine the 28 oz being too thick.
Thanks.......Tom
