Normally when I go up north for the Memorial Day weekend, it just involves getting the water going in the house and getting the boats in the water. This year turned out to have a few extra's.

I walked down to the lake to check my lift only to find a rather large Hemlock had come down off the hill. The canopy is history!! I thought at first I could straighten the aluminum frame but it's just too badly bent and kinked. Even the main horizontals on the canopy frame are bent.

Then there was getting the Tique in the water. At the end of last summer, my son trashed the prop. I got a new OJ and then had Mark (LLS) run over and install it. At that time, Mark said he felt the damage went beyond the prop. When I went up to winterize it and hang it in the boathouse, I didn't have time to really check it. I just idled it down the shore and put it away in the boathouse. Well, sure enough, I got it going Sunday and sure didn't like the way it vibrated at anything off idle. It's now on the trailer in my shop with the bend strut and bent shaft (sawed out) removed!!

Also last year when I put it away, the ignition key was missing (my son again). Getting it put away involved the old hot wire trick!! Well, I completely forgot about the key issue but my old memory was jogged on Sunday. Thankfully, Watercraft Sales had a 3 pole switch and their parts dept. opened on Sunday!!

Pete - You are holding up the old adage - 1 hr of maintenance for each hour of use!

No boating here in Iowa - it has rained 4 days straight. The rivers & lakes are all flooded.

Not a fun weekend indeed Pete.

Over here spring has had just two days of sun... For the rest it's rain and cold temps [:'(]
The boat is just lying alone in the marina, hull full of green junk [:'(] Not even possible to clean it...
Only had one refill of the LPG tank since season started mid april.

Sorry to hear that Pete, but look at the bright side, got the entire summer ahead of you, new shiny keys, and prop with shaft, and plenty of firewood! Son goes on "Restrictions"!!

Don't forget to align it when you put the new shaft in. Also, it's a good idea to lap the prop.

If you are not familiar with what Hollywood is talking about, here is an excellent description.

Make sure the misalignment has not fretted the coupler, you better install a new cutlass bearing, check the strut for straightness and insure that the prop to strut and prop to hull clearances are set to optimum.

Since you have to change it anyway, you might as well go with the ARE double taper.

Oh, and an a more serious note, sorry about that whole tree thing. That really sucks. Fortunate tho, I guess (looking for a bright side here) it didn't happen when a boat was in it, potentially damaging that too.

Not a good way to start the summer Pete, but I would suggest while you are doing all of that work to the Tique, check out those stringers while you are at it!

Pics or it didn't happen.

Gotta love the irony, it was one shaft which created another shaft which eventually bent the shaft!

Sound like a case of wet foam to me

Be sure to use a stainless cotter pin on your prop. Anything else will rust pretty quickly. As much tubing as we all know that you do , we'd hate for you to lose that new OJ.

Joking aside, I hate that your weekend started off like that but it is comforting to know this kinda stuff just doesn't happen to me.

I saw this last night and was trying to come up with a good wise acre comment...but you guys have used them all up.

Pete, it's time to train the kid to fix his own screw ups.
For years me and my friend watched his father work on equipment. As kids we were never afraid of work, we could watch it all day.

The control has been a big problem. The boat problem is just the "tip of the iceberg". However, I can just imagine the bigger problems I would have if the below would be true!!
