I am looking at buying a 1987 2001 Correct Craft. The floor and stringers appear to be solid, however, the glass is cracked and bare wood showing down the inside upper edge of both stringers for about 3ft rear of the motor (underneath the shaft access). The wood that is showing also appears to be solid and not rotted. How can I be sure that there is no dry rot? Do I need to drill into the stringers at various points? If there is dry rot do I need to somehow replace the stringers or is there some sort of bondo/epoxy product that I can use? Thanks for any advice.

I can and will take a picture. Should have it by the end of the week. I am picking it up then. I have talked with the local dealer and he said that the more serious issue would be any soft spots in the floor (and I do not believe there are). If the glass on the rear stringers is degraded, as long as the water could be escaping and is not trapped than the stringers should be fine. I will take a picture when I pick it up and send it. Would you agree with what the dealer said?

turn the 9/16 bolts that hold the engine frame down..this will tell you if the stringers are good or bad...what climate do you live in ?....if your down south then you've got a good chance there ok...if your in the wet cold where I live then look close and make sure the stringers are good....my 87 is gutted right now and I'am redoing the stringers and floor..both were rotten...the dealer is right although neather is a good thing a soft floor means water has gotten though the fibreglass..and that sucks!!!
I'am in the middle of this project right now I can try to post the pics next week of both the rotten floor and stringers if your interested..... I hope you live in the south. Cheers |

Thanks for the info. I checked the bolts and they are good. I am in central California so I take it that is good also. I think the boat has always been garaged and that is a big plus. Do you have the PCM motor in your 87? I would be very interested in the pics of floor and stringers. Is it true that your summers up there are really just a few weeks of bad skiing? Sorry but I was talking to a Canadian service guy the other day and that is how he described the Canadian summer. Best of luck!

good to here...I do have the PCM engine..I think all the 351 engines were PCM'S...I'am taking pics. thoughout the project hopping they will come in handy one day for refferance if any one is to do the same project....and after reading some of the forums on this site and the other two...this project seams popular...I'll see if I can get some pics. up by next week..the boat and camera are at my week end house..so I can only work on it on the week ends.. to answer the summer question:I live on the west coast(2 hours north of Seattle)..in Vancouver.. if your not sure where Vancouver is you will after the 2010 olimpics...any way.. I start skiing in April and go til October so I have great summers,not all hot and sunny mind you..but great skiing..
good to here you got a good boat 2001's are great boats I've owm mine since new.. cheers |

A word of coution using the "try the bolts" method. If you can closly inspect the wood. poke with an awl. If the fiberglass is loose, pry it away and dig at the wood a bit. This will tell you alot more than turning the bolts.
The bolts into the stringers in my Barracuda are nice and tight, because they are firmly screwed into the stringer, problem is- the top two thirds of the stringer is fine, the bottom third, is gone, the wood is simply not there anymore, and the fiberglass is starting to collaps under teh weight and torque of teh motor. |

I was able to look at the boat last weekend and found that the glass is coming apart on the outboard stringer. I didn't dig into it so i am not to sure the condition of the stringer but it seems to be ok. I spoke to a friend and he said one way to see if the stringers are bad is to see if there are any spider cracks in the gell coat outside of the suspect area. I checked the gell coat and there wasn't any. But i will be looking into it further when i get the boat done to me. I am in south florida and the boat is in central florida and has alwasy been in fresh water so it shouldn't bee to bad. I will try to post pics when i get them.

If bare wood is showing, you should treat the wood before you re-fiberglass it. There's a product called "Git-Rot" that should work. I'd recommend using a paint brush to apply antifreeze to the wood, as much as the wood will soak up. That will kill any bacteria and fungi that's hanging around.
