Good afternoon all, i got my boat up and running like a champ now.... then i noticed behind my engine there are two "stringers/ boards going left and right" that the fiberglass covering is coming off and i can see a little bit of the wood. Does anyone know how much this would normally cost to repair? i have been reading all of the Stringer replacement conversations and it seems so complicated i thought id ask how much it would cost to have someone repair them.

Jax - To have someone do a decent job would be $4000+.
Essentially, economics suggest either do the repair yourself or use the boat 'as is' until it is no longer seawortthy & then part it out. |

It sounds like you're talking about the crossbar that spans the main stringers. This is used to support the rear removable floor. However, I didn't think there were 2 of them in a 79.
If they are coming off, it is likely you have delamination somewhere else. Can you post pictures? It should be easy to repair yourself. How handy are you? |

Well guys I have received a lot of great advice here and have the boat running awesome. It was willed to me by a friend who had it in a storage unit for like 20 years.
I am handy but am a little nervous cutting, and sanding into the boat... Here is what I found. Behind the engine block, the supports that run left and right. "not stringers but what comes off them". had the coating coming off, so I took a peak behind the coating to see whats up and found some rotten wood. I have been all over the net reading about these and it seems do-able for me but I wanted some good insight or advise how to do it. I am going to take pics Saturday- don't know how to post them but will try. I really do not want to sell it after all I have done to the boat and how it was willed to me, but if its going to cost me $$$$ I would actually consider selling . which im trying to avoid. |

If you can cut wood & paint with a brush, you have the skills needed to do this.
Referencing my earlier post, you can have someone repair that single spot for a few hundred, but most likely the rot goes deeper. |
