I was combing the inter web, trying to find info on replacing the steering cable on my 16' Larson Flyer outboard (we live on a lake that is limited to 90hp outboard power). I came across this thing;

That was the set up my Dad had before he bought his Ski Nautique, 14 ft Larson with a 90HP on it, cable steering, said it used to turn on a dime. That was early 60's boat...

Actually yes. When I first bought it, without a skier it would hit around 45mph. I was able to foot at about 36mph. We actually pulled my son and 2 of his buddies footing together. Granted, together their combined weight was around 300lbs. We then put a tower on it, which cut down on speed. But it did allow us to do the around the boat trick.
