Well, I finally got the job I've been applying for since 2005.

Starting monday I'll be stationned at "KayBee" Airforce Base, where I'll become a member of the F16 ground crews in the 349 Squadron!

Finally rid of that boring and stupid desk job!!
My new job will be "Air Mission Planning", much more exiting than paperwork.
I'll feel like a soldier again, instead of a clerk...

Little piece of personal history to enlighten you guys.

My first job in the army was as a tank commander. Did that for eight years and loved it.
Due to an accident, I hurt my back and was not qualified to be a tank commander anymore. At that point I made a bad choice and was assigned to a desk job.
It didn’t take me long to figure out that this wasn’t my cup of tea. So I started applying for other, more military oriented jobs…

Since 2005, I applied several times for the job I’m starting on Monday. Each time I was denied the job with the explanation that I was “indispensable” at my current job.
Each time I tried to explain that I do not like the job I’m doing and could therefore not be “indispensable”, but no deal.

Not trying to offend anyone, but I don’t know how officials (or officiaries, funtionaries) are in the States, but here in Belgium they are as flexible as a crowbar… Whether they are army clerks or other government clerks…
My beloved colleagues are a perfect example of this. One statement of a colleague is burned in my brain forever: “I’m not here to be flexible nor to help the client, I’m just here to implement the rules”. Having parents and a wife who all run small businesses, where flexibility and service towards their customers are high values, you can imagine that my colleagues and I have heated discussions on regular bases. Furthermore, administration is the example of absolute inefficiency, where tons of useless paper is wasted for a komma at the wrong place. OMFG!
So for the past nine years I have done a job that I actually hate. But it never crossed my mind to quit the army. First and foremost, I am a soldier and will die a soldier, proud to serve my country and my allies.
But that will all be in the past soon. And I will bury this chapter of my career as deep as I can, looking forward to serve my country and allies once again!

I spent a few days in the squadron that I will be assigned to on monday. What a different world that is! These people run on efficiency! “Rules are fine, but first of all, get the job done, as efficient as can be”. I love the motto of that squadron: “Strike hard, strike home”.
My kind of people!!

Congrats on the new job Kristof!..... No offense taken on the paper pusher. Thats what I'm doing these days and can honestly say I hate it. I'm a mechanic by nature and fixing things is what I enjoy most. When I was working on the repair benches I was always the "go to guy" when they needed a part repaired properly and quickly. Commonly referred to as "Foot Magic". A mechanic is what I am and what I will always will be.

Good luck with the new job, the new adventure and as always.....

Thank you for serving!

Congratulations Kristof, Proof that persistence pays off! There is nothing better than getting paid to do something you love.

Good deal Kris. My current job is the most desk oriented job I have ever done. When something carbureted comes through the shop I am usually called upon which gets me excited because I really don't get to work on anything much anymore haha.

Congrats!

Jobs in the military are true Catch-22 stories.

To move on to a better job, you have to be good at your current job, But you are too good at your current job, so we can't let you move on to a better job.

Congrats Kristof. Glad to hear that your persistance has paid off.

When I was in the submarine service, I absolutely loved it. I would have made it career if I didn't want to raise a family. the time away from home sucked, the duty itself was extremely rewarding.

When people run down to the lake to see what's making that noise, you've succeeded.
