Can I convert my non-tunable rudder in my 97SN to a tunable one? The trim tab is easily purchased, I just wonder whether anybody has cut the little section out of the rudder and fitted the tab? If so how did they do it? This would save buying a very expensive newer rudder.

You probably could if you have a buddy that has a machine shop. The cut towards the rear of the trim tab is rounded to cup the tab when it is tightened to hold it at said adjustment. You know you can tune the rudder without that right? What are you looking to accomplish? A fellow on the site is in need of an 11A rudder in Ireland. You could sell him yours and purchase a new tunable piece.

No I didn't know my rudder could be tunable, how is this done?
Also I didn't realise the cut is rounded as you say, not sure whether that makes it more difficult to do or not, since I'm not sure what tooling is required to do the cut with.

I think selling to a different country would be cost prohibitive due to weight.

Better to have tunable for running the course, my friend's 05SN has much better tracking, that's the reason.

Don't mind Hollywood, he prefers a double dutch rudder, tunable is nice but once they are set it's no different then grinding yours a bit as/if necessary

tabbed rudders come up from time to on E-bay, I have one but am saving it for another project. keep in mind the early 11-A tabbed rudders are different then the 2002-current tabbed rudders. the newer rudders have a bigger surface area and are a bit longer overall.

Thanks Jody, does it matter which one I use? I presume either would be OK?

Still unsure whether I can alter my existing one? Drop saw to cut the section out and grind the rounded part in?

A new model will work fine, however it imop is overkill on a older ski nautique. We went to that rudder because a one size fits most. the bigger direct drives needed something a little bigger then what we were installing in the SN so the rudder was enlarged and it did not impact the performance of the 196.

Belt sander or grinder to the right or left trailing edge of the rudder depending on which way you want it to pull. Doesn't take much grinding to make a big difference. Fwiw once I found a setting I liked I have not touched my tunable rudder so the quick-change functionality is kinda moot anyway.

I agree. You don't need a fancy tuning tab to tune a rudder. It's been done as Joel stated since I'd say the 50's!!!
