Well guys..the computer in the Command Center has been giving me fits. It is a Dell that we brought down here from Ohio almost 10 years ago. Sure its been updated and cleaned out and fixed up quite a few times..but now that XP has ended my computer guy sez I gotta unplug and bring 'er in to him. Gonna load up something else to run it and make it alot faster. Promises that it will run just the same for me..only better. He knows I do not handle change well.
So hopefully I'll be back in a couple days...and maybe I won't be back at all if I can't run the changes. Sure has been a fun run here.. john |

You could pick up a decent laptop for about $600-$700 and you'd be good to go. You could probably finance it interest free if cost is an issue.
Take the leap JBear. |

Jbear good luck with Windows 8 the main user interface is designed to be used on touch screen devices. A new laptop will come with Windows 8. Not much positive feedback out there for this release a bit like Windows ME and Vista.
Most of the commercial users have not moved to Microsoft's latest OS but stayed with Windows 7. Microsoft are working hard to get Windows 9 out there later this year. Microsoft stopped support for XP on the 8th of April. This does not mean you cannot keep running it just means that there will be no more updates etc. |

John....I am so tight, that the only reason I let go of a dollar bill is to get a better grip on it. That said, my opinion is that people throw good money after bad by fixing up an old computer. I bought my wife a Toshiba laptop a year or so back at Best Buy for $250. It has Windows 8 on it. Never had a bit of trouble with it. Unless you are really attached to your computer, and I guess maybe that is the issue, I would retire it to the computer museum, and get yourself a laptop that will already contain all the new goodies you want and need.

I've had more problems with cheap laptops than anything else. My HP tower ran for over 10 years relatively trouble free too.
Make sure the new keyboard goes up to F12. |

^^. +1 to that. Costco had good deals on pc's a year or so ago. We have been much happier with a tower and monitor than we ever wer with the last 4 laptops that only lasted about a year each. I agree that old pc's are throwing away good money, so new is a good bet. Have fun with the upgrade

There's always Chromebook too.
If you're mostly just going on the internet and sending emails, it's probably all you need. The only drawback is you can't use it at all if you're not on the net, but I hardly ever use a computer not on the net anyway. |

We were just at Costco the other day. They had some pretty decent PCs there in both tower and laptop varieties. Not sure why you had such a short lifespan on your laptops. My wife's 17" Acer is going on 7 years with no issues and even my netbook is still cranking along after 3+ years. We don't bog them down with too much software and always remove the bloatware. |

We're looking to pass down wifey's laptop. We've been looking at the Macbook Pro and the newer touch screen Windows 8 machines. Haven't decided yet which way we're going to go.

The biggest disadvantage to the Macbook is the cost, and the second biggest is getting used to things like "Command C" to copy and no right click. But man, as someone who's been forced to ride a tired Vista machine into extra innings, my girlfriend's almost 6 year old Macbook sure seems like a gem. Always just starts right up. In fact, while I'm waiting for my Vista machine to get into a usable state, I often use her computer. Now that my Vista machine is over 7 years old, it probably sounds like sour grapes, but it was slow as molasses right out of the box; I'll never fully forgive Microsoft for that one. XP and Windows 7 are pretty solid. Minimal complaints about my work Windows 7 machine... but of course, it's so locked down, it can't get itself into trouble, and I will randomly get a blue screen of death at inconvenient times, like right before a meeting I'm supposed to be leading. Haven't heard anything too great about Windows 8. Long story short, if you have the cash, go with the Macbook. You'll most likely get a longer useful service live, so it will be worth the money. |

My HP laptop is going on 4-5 years maybe? My family has had great luck with HP.
That said Windows 8 is HORRIBLE. Next home computer I buy will probably be a desktop MAC. I don't really use a laptop at all. Dad just scored an old school cool desk that will probably end up being mine. I'll post a pole on which old Correct Craft color it needs to be painted ha. |

Mac's do get virus. They just keep it quite. The Mrs has been using them for years. She got something awhile back and took it to the apple store with no appointment. They said cant happen, they will look at it later. Just then another person came in with the same problem, they took both pc's into the back and fixed them right then and nothing more was said. I have been using Dell laptop with great success trouble is it seems when you have a PC and a Mac the printer wifi is always confused and now I can only get it to work with the cord after the Mrs used it last

This guy I work with, who is more knowledgeable than me in the area, and a hard core PC loyalist, did give me the tip that you can still specify Windows 7 (instead of 8) be loaded, when buying a new PC. I haven't tested that for myself, but worth looking into.
