One way to verify timing advance is to put a timing light on it & rev the engine (I do 500 RPM increments) & see if the timing is advancing somewhat linear.

Another way is to take the dizzy cap & rotor off, then manually move the weights to see that they are free & the springs aren't broken or badly rusted.

I would do both!

Thanks Chris. How would one investigate that?

One reply and that's it? No more comments or suggestions?

Maybe I shoulda said we're tubers, that always seems to elicit plenty of response...

1974 T-E 351.

Saturday after a few hours of smooth running, slowed to turn and bogged out quite a bit. Slowed it further, gradually increased throttle, then it smoothed out nicely for the hour+ ride back to the marina; mostly around 2900, and responded nicely to more power.

Once safely back near home base, played with it a bit and discovered this occurring, milder but still noticeable, between 1500-2500rpms. Runs fine below and above this range. Engine running maybe 4 hours continuous; Turned it off, then it fired right up just fine, throttle straight up, just like it always does.

Filled tank before departure and at first was thinking maybe some bad gas or some crap in the line but then figured this would effect all range, not just 1500-2500rpm....

Comments?
