Nice to have a spare on hand to swap in there, and even nicer that it ended up working.

Great to see that boat getting used in 2023, 57 years old if I did the math correctly.

It's been awhile since I've posted.  Here's an update on the '65 Nautique:

Last summer the rebuilt 71C transmission with maybe 10 hours of use failed.  I was pulling into the boat lift, went into reverse to slow down, and the boat stalled.  Went to neutral, started the boat, and it lurched forward, almost going through the lift - that would have been bad!  Shifting into reverse stalled the boat again. After getting the boat safely on the lift I determined the transmission was stuck in forward.  Could have been so much worse as I think of the times where I have pulled up to a dock, counting on reverse to slow me down.  Well that was it for summer of 2022.

Fortunately, I had a spare 71C from one of the marine engines that I bought for parts.  It was an early unit mated to an early FE in unknown condition.  At least the fluid looked OK and so I thought it was worth giving a try.  At a minimum it would be a place-holder to attach the motor mounts to and hold up the rear of the motor while working on the failed transmission.  Degreased, and with a quick shot of paint to match the motor, it was ready to install.

The swap went well.  I used some lifting ears that came with one of the engines to suspend the rear of the motor.  Glad I installed studs in place of the lowest two bolts when the first transmission was installed to help guide the transmission into place.

After getting things bolted up, I went to the boat ramp.  Boat started, no leaks, so far so good.  Let it warm up, then checked forward and reverse.  Still no leaks and seemed to be going into gear properly.  Checked and added some fluid and took a cruise, everything worked fine.  I now have a couple of hours of cruising and all seems to be ok.

One of my winter projects will be tearing into the transmission that I pulled out to find out what happened and hopefully can fix it.

Sweet boat!  Very nice work.  I bet that 390 sounds sweet!  Love them FE motors.

Boat looks amazing, and love the picture with the skier!  If it's possible for a boat to be smiling, that one is.

Phil

I dug through my "pile of parts that might come in handy for somebody one day" and came up with what's in the picture.

It's the cam and the plate you need.

I found a dead switch, but that won't do you any good.

This plate takes the newer NSS that has a 7/8 hex head. The PCM part number is R153011 for the switch. The part number listed and linked earlier will fit. There's a wide variety of prices when you get looking.

It's cheaper than the old bigger switch too Wink

Send me a PM with your address and they'll be on the way to Iowa for a worthy boat.

We'll call it a donation to your project

Like he mentioned he needs the cover/mounting plate and the cam too, not just a switch  Wink

I'm looking for a few items to finish off this project:

The Ski Nautique script that goes on dash is broken in two pieces.  I believe its the same emblem used on the Gen 2 boats, and maybe even the 2001's?

My 71C does not have a neutral safety switch.  If anyone has a junk Velvet Drive laying around, I'm interested in the switch, the mounting plate, and the cam that actuates the switch (like the one shown here).

Send me pm if you have either of these.  Thanks!

I've been taking it easy breaking in the motor, but so far I'm pretty happy with the way the 390 is running.

The distributor is a Mallory marine unit with points.  I'm running a Carter 4 BBL (I believe this to be the original carb) converted to electric choke.  Idle is smooth, throttle response is nice and snappy with no bog.

I have to give a shout out to Gary Myers from Motorheads Mfg in Ely for doing the machine work and assembly, working with parts from multiple motors.

At long last... the '65 is in the water and running again! (after at least 30 years, 11 of those in my possession)

Initial start on a garden hose went well until it started to rain, Next I dipped the boat in the Cedar River on the trailer to finish breaking in the cam, test the complete raw water system and transmission shifting.  Found my thermostat housing was leaking, fixed that, then trailered to Lake Delhi for the shake down cruise.

Docked next to the 97:

Running down river about 25 MPH

Thanks to Keith and everyone on CCFan that has helped with this project and provided moral support along the way, especially Art who found the original bill of sale and helped with the missing puzzle pieces.
