Does anybody have a suggestions on how/if the platform bracket life can be extended. I go through a set every two years. Is it due to the weight of the engine and that the platform sits in the water and thus a lift would eliminate the issue or is it also due to pressure on the platform when the boat is coming out of the hole? The rattling is driving me crazy and they are not cheap to replace. Thanks

You could try to adapt the current platform bracket design to the boat. Not sure if it would work.

I don't think it's unique to a SAN -- my 99 ski also rattles, but I think it's related to the back of the platform starting to "sag" a little. Have you put a hand on it, pulled the platform up a bit and heard the rattling stop? I was planning on trying to work with the existing brackets

It's definitely not unique to the SAN, the rattling platform is a common python problem. Not sure if it's due solely to the rough idle or if weight/water height plays a role, but I can't imagine the solution being impossible. Going through a set of brackets biannually is crazy!
Can anyone with a 496 python comment on whether they suffer from the same issue as the 502? Weight between the 2 should be similar. |

Tully,
What's happening to the brackets? Breaking/bending or corrosion? How about some pictures. Welcome to CCfan. We'd love to see pictures of the boat as well. |

The end result is a sloppy fit between the mating halves of the removable brackets, which then shake and make noise. The suspicion is that the lumpy idle causes the wear, presumably aided by the pulsation of the exhaust.

Mine rattle, (or did) and yes it is annoying. They had a small O-ring (top-inside) which come off or get lost every time you remove the platform.
I found that just a small bead of silicone on the slides will stop the rattle. And the reason for the silicone is so the platform is still removable. If you never want the platform to come off then I suppose a person could use the 3M 5200. |

Al, what brackets are you talking about? The 90-09 brackets im familiar with don't have provisions for o-rings that I have ever noticed... And the fit isn't sloppy enough to vibrate or rattle (python boats being the exception).

I haven't looked into the issue much, it wasn't until UG was with me late last summer and lifted up the platform. If a pair of pliers on the platform side female brackets doesn't work for me, I'll have trbenj come up with a good solution for mine, and relay the message. I don't believe that there is a lot of play though. What do you notice to be the reason for a lack of rattling when you buy new brackets? Less play when mounted?

Tully, just looked into my platform today. I assume that your issue is similar to mine. What I found is that the top pin holes were slightly enlarged, compared to the bottom. If a small pin is used, more rattling will occur. Before buying new brackets, I'd buy pins that are very difficult to get in. My old ones fit in the bottom hole quite well, but I used slightly larger diameter ones for the top. Hope this helps.

we got the FAE exhaust on and that creates more pressure on the platform.
Snaps the rings off every couple of month. Just get a new ring (got mine from an older trailer hitch). While not a Python I guess the cause is the same... |

mine rattles on my '99 super air w/GT40. This season I added a second set of cotter pins near the top...this helps a lot...

As far as I can tell, I'm not quite sure...

I've wrestled with this issue in another thread on this site. I brainstormed with the manufacturer of the bracket a few months back.
There is standard an o-ring that sits inside at the top of the platform piece of the bracket. Since the boat piece of the bracket did not seat properly at the one o-ring, I added another. Now the top is secure. The resulting upward seating caused a slight misalignment of the pin holes. I had someone sit on the platform, which allowed me to insert an oval head bolt rather than a pin. The countersunk head addresses the misshaping of the pin holes on the platform piece of the bracket, which was created by wear over time. I could do this only on one side as I could not figure out a countersunk counterpart on the nut side. The bolt is sized so it sits in the boat piece of the bracket without play. I tightened the nut and bolt so that there is no play in the bracket at all. I am hoping that it stays tight. For now, no rattle or annoying slop. |
