I have my '85 2001 stripped down and being sanded and buffed out. I went ahead and removed the rub rail and purchased a new one. The original was held on by a ton of what looks like 1" #8 flat head screws. Should I use the same type of screws to install the new one? Would it be better to use a pan head type screw to avoid ripples in the rub-rail during install?
Also, I assume I need to pilot drill each hole. Should I leave the hole in the rub rail slightly bigger than the screw? Thanks! Chuck |

Do it in the sun on a hot day then give it a (TINY) bit of strech. The trick is to not over tighten the screw which buldges the rubber. I filled all the old holes with thickened epoxy before installing the new one.

Wow! I hope mine ends up half as nice. Mine is grey hull with Burgundy stripes. Mine was so faded I couldn't even tell the shadow on the letters was red originally. Do you think it would be OK caulking the old holes... As you know, there are a ton of them.

Chuck,
The danger of caulking is running into a old hole with the new install. Fill then as recommended with thickened epoxy. If you like the idea of a caulking gun, they do have empties. Fill one up with the epoxy mix and go for it! |

That's a good idea Pete I used a big syringe that they sell in the horse dept of my local tractor supply.

I too use syringes. Good old McMaster has them in a variety of sizes. Cheap and I think they comes in bags of 20. Let the epoxy cure and you can pull the left over slug out and use it again/ |

I bought # 8 1 1/4" truss head scores from Jamestown dist. Work well without spreading rub rail.
