Goodday all.

So I plan on replacing my boat deck over winter (southern hemisphere)
I believe the original way was foam with fiberglass directly on top... I used this method to patch a dodgy spot when I first got the boat and have been more than happy.

The deck was replaced in the boats past but they used ply and then glassed over, is there any reason for me to go this route (other than under the front seats as per original spec)

When the sole was replaced by a PO, do you know if the foam was removed or not? If it was removed, that may be the reason for the ply. A foamed hull can support the glass but without the foam, you need the ply.

it definitely has foam in it (I dug a section out where I replaced the deck and refoamed it partly as a test and so I could have a very nice looking inspection hole to get my buoyancy certificate). But going back locally in SA most boats didn't have foam so ply decks were common place,

I think this may be the case here. I'd just like to eliminate the extra work and cost of adding ply to the equation should it not be needed.

What's going on with the ply that was installed previously?
Once you start digging, you may find some surprises!!

Personally, I'd go no foam with a CPES'd and epoxy glassed (both sides) ply sole.

well I the area I replaced was a section under the rear seat that had water sitting pooled on it. (boat sitting outside in the weather at an angle) The stringer there was still in good shape from what I could tell, but the ply was completely shot, it was not treated on the underside from what I can tell.

By law I have to have foam here, (Not that any of the inspectors know any better)

If you are set on using foam to maintain your legality and all that jazz then I would not use plywood... itll just be something to rot. I wouldn't even use it under the front seats. Originally the material under the front seats was plain lumber nominal 1 inch thick. You would be better off using cpes treated 1x8s or 1x12s or something of the like under the seats than going with plywood.   As you can see by what you pulled up on your boat plywood next to foam is an invitation to rot, pervasive rot that festers through the plywood with ease turning it to mush. Don't do it I tell you...   douglas fir board stock treated with cpes would be better, or some coosa board or the equal with a layer of glass on both sides.   Some will try to tell you that if you soak the plywood in cpes and glass both sides that it will be ok... don't believe them, not next to foam - its evil I tell you, pure evil .   The rest of the floor simply glass over the foam as the factory did, even if it gets damaged at some point from anchor trauma or the like then you will be able to fix it quickly.

well let me tell you that ply that i dug out needed dental records to confirm its identity.

I can foam a small section of the hull with an inspection hole and leav ethe rest open, noone be be any wiser. but if there were some accident insurance etc etc would be an issue.
