    Posted: April-19-2016 at 10:28pm
Hello all,

My steering is a little stiff to turn. Not muscle man stiff but stiffer than normal. I've poked around and don't see any obvious spots to lube the cable. Does anyone know if these cables are grease-able? and/or what procedure to take to lube it?

The boat is on my list to do a full out restore (maybe 3 to 5 years out from starting) but want to use it a few summers first while I setup shop, so, really not wanting to put a new cable in now.

Cheers,

Tom,
Disconnect the cable at the tiller arm to confirm it's the cable and not the rudder/port or helm. No, there's not a convenient way to lube them. Some have tried but I feel it's best to replace the cable if needed.

Nice Tique. Keep us informed on your progress.

I am with Pete on this one. Not a real good way to lube them. A friend has drilled a few holes along the cable to squirt small amounts of lubricant hoping it helps but still puts up with a crazy stiff steering wheel.. Order a new cable. It's well worth the money.

Agreed. You should be able to spin the wheel with no effort. New cable is well worth the money.

For $100, I would not suffer with stiff steering for 3-5 years. Replace the cable.

Its not worth waiting 3 - 5 years. Down at White Lake last weekend they knocked out a cable exchange between lunch and the afternoon water session.
_____________
“So, how was your weekend?”
“Well, let me see…sun burn, stiff neck, screwed up back, assorted aches and pains….yup, my weekend was great, thanks for asking.”

He won't have to wait 3-5 years. The cable will snap long before that and then he'll be forced to change it. It never fails that it will snap at the most inopportune time too.
When people run down to the lake to see what's making that noise, you've succeeded.

Thanks for the comments. I didn't think there was an easy way to lube that things. Its not the rudder, the rudder is on my kitchen table, repacking the rudder shaft stuffing. Yes, things seem to always break at the most inopportune times. The stringers and floors have been replaced once. Don't know if they tied that cable down in some inaccessible place (they did on the fuel line)... I guess there is only one way to find out.

Cheers.
