Some of you may recall I mentioned thinking about doing a project of building or restoring a wooden vintage racing boat, as soon as money and time seemed available. Amazingly enough I found a hull that would do the trick. A few days later I found an ad for a 1960 V8 with trans out of a boat. (I am taking the timing of these two discoveries as an omen that can't be ignored) The engine reportedly ran when removed, but that was 12 years ago, been sitting in a garage, since. I am going to look at it soon. Assuming its locked up a bit, if I can get the crank shaft to turn with a wrench on the pulley, is there a fair chance I could get it running again. What's your opinion? I am also going to have to take seller's word that there is no reason the block would be cracked due to freezing.

pull the plugs hit the cylinders with some blaster, let it set a bit then rotate with a breaker bar. Its possible shes basically good, I would try to get a compression test out of it as well but the blaster can give an artifically high readings on only slightly scored stuff. Not worth the possiblity of turning it dry with a little light rust in there to try and get a perfect compression test though. Good luck.

I would say that the odds of it running are pretty good if the block isn't cracked (from freezing). But you can check the plugs for that. My boat had sat for seven years when I bought it, and all it took to get it running was a tuneup.

Do you have the hull yet? What is she?

Ive been trying to buy a homemade,mid 50s, wooden,front-engine "race" boat... It originally sported a direct-drive flat head(read NO trans/neutral ). The cockpit is at the transom.. hasnt been in water for years... Ive got an original marine , aluminumn tri-power intake for a SBC, just waiting for something like that...

I bought my boat after sitting for 10 years. It was uncovered out in the rain, and there was water in the oil from condensation over the years. It is a 1969 327 V8. I sprayed Marvel Mystery Oil on the cylinders, and turned it over by hand. Runs like a top now. IMO, MMO is better than blaster. I also ran it through the crankcase with fresh oil. Really did a great job removing sludge from the engine. Spin it at least a few revolutiuons by hand before running the starter to be sure no valves are slipping.

Actually, this is a reproduction. Built from the Glen-L plans by a guy in Canada. I watched it progress on the Glen-L site for a while. As soon as he finished it he put it up for sale. Can't imagine selling this thing. Any pictures of the boat you are after? The one I am looking at is pretty rough. After the parts wanted post I did for everything from engine to trans to shaft, shaft log, strut, prop rudder, (yeah I know, good luck with that) I actually found someone locally that had everyone of those parts that he salvaged off an old rotten woody. The hull I found is rough but servicable. Set up as an outboard, (a bracket on the back, not a transom mount.) I would have to figure out how to get stringers in it to mount the motor.

Saw the motor last weekend. Turns easily. Some of the valves seem to be sticking or banging a little. Hopefully not a big deal.

I dont have any pics of the one Im talking about, hope to before summer is over.. Not in a big hurry. Im still working on the new interior in my 64 'skier...

After that Ive gotta get back on my 62 Higgins, 9 coats of varnish down, 5 or 6 to go. Then I need to rebuild the 283 for it..dont need any more projects for a while..

Here are a couple other crackerboxes I have found. The top two pics are of a boat built by Spencer Boat Works in NY. Its for sale, they want $14,000 for it. A little steep. Look at the transom, it has a "surface drive". The third pic is another Glen-L that a guy someplace out west built.

The final picture is the hull I am considering getting. Since I didn't get the engine and all the hardware I was hoping on, (got out bid at the last second on ebay) my project may have suffered a bit of a slow down. However, it would be hard to pass on this hull to save for a rainy day.

I have some of what your looking for in various conditions though and not from a CC, I have a complete rudder assembly with through hull and what not, assume it minumum needs repacking and polishing, for the drive shaft I have a strut (assume needs bearings) I also have a set of brass parts that the sandwich the the hull and contain the stuffing box. I have the shaft and prop that goes with those two parts but its pretty much shot, and I have a borg warner 71c with a 289 (maybe also 302/351 bell housing) it also has the hoses and transcooler. I pulled all this off a wizardcraft inboard I bought for the trailer and scrapped out, the only thing worth anything to me at this point is the velvet drive as a spare but since they appear to be rebuildable even that is not all that important. Its not a full drive train but if you going to piece something together for sure it might help you out, let me know if you have any interest and I will go out to my storage space and take pictures.
