I need help. I pretty much am all set to buy 10year old 210 that I really like, but today learned that the transmission oil has never been replaced on the boat and it has 680hrs. The 1-owner is good with the boat and has always cared for it but has had regular maintenance done at a shop that simply never replaced the transmission oil because apparently they don't do it unless someones tells them to. Is there a way to know if that transmission is shot!? What do you recommend? Just walk away? Ask for a discount in case something goes bad? How much would be the cost to repair? I hear stories of people that replace the transmission oil after not doing it in a long time and then it goes bad. I feel that many hours and 10 years is a pretty long time to have never replaced the oil.

Javier, You are confusing an automotive automatic transmission with a V drive. The actual V drive is nothing more than a gear box. Change the oil and I feel it will be fine. |

At less than 700 hours, I would be more concerned with the transmission run with too little fluid. If the fluid level was OK, the 680 hours on the original fluid would not be a big concern for me -- assuming that the trans appears to be functioning properly with no slipping or growling.

I agree with JQ and Pete. If the level is ok, and obviously the oil should look and feel like oil, I'd go ahead and just do a change when you get the boat.

Does it work? I think what you're asking is how much life is left in it and nobody can know that. A friend of mine went 1,000 hours on his tranny before it needed a rebuild and he never changed the fluid. |

Wondering if everyone is talking about the same thing? On an 2006 210 would there be a transmission typical to a direct drive & uses Dextron Type fluid and also a VDrive unit which iirc uses a gear oil or something like that?? Those VDrive units have a much longer change interval, some I think are actually "never", just keep it full.

Now that you mention it I was wondering the same thing Chris, tranny or gearbox. I assumed tranny, but maybe I'm wrong?

Thanks for all your feedback. I am new into the inboards and learning as I can. I think what needs the oil replaced which manufacturer recommends every 100 hrs is the transmission not the vdrive gear box if they are separate. Essentially the part that allows the boat to switch to reverse that connects to the engine
I did however only find one oil dipstick. Transmission seems to be worki g fine though and oil old but not terrible. Thanks again. This helps |
