'87 SN Steering Cable

   Hello All, 

First post, but Ive been around the forum for a few months now.  Thanks for the wealth of knowledge that gets passed around here! 

My steering cable has recently failed, and I followed the steps here:

hoping that they applied/were roughly similar for my older SN.  I have been able to completely disconnect the steering cable but cannot pass it through the boat as expected.  I have tied a line in the rudder-end but it seems that the end of the cable wont make the 'turn' up through the opening to the bilge under the drivers feet.  

Any thoughts or suggestions here would be much appreciated!

	I attach a rope/cable at the helm end then pull it down into the bilge. Swap the rope/cable to the new cable and pull it back up. The rudder end would never make the bend if you tried to pull it through to the helm.

	Depends on the boat I guess, some seem to have done it from under the dash, though from the bilge seems far easier on all applications.

	Pull it out via the bilge, duct tape the big nut to the end of the cable that goes to the helm and leave the protective sheath on the exposed cable. Shove it up from the bilge. Should be fairly easy. Make the the tape sort of have a taper which will help the cable not get caught on anything. The cable is rigid and easily pushed. Most boats have a hard time passing the rearward solid end of the cable through the under floor area.

	Thanks for the quick responses! It came out fine in moving aft, though I am a bit concerned with getting the new one in with not being able to secure the rope to the very tip of the cable as with the rear end. We'll see!

	Use the nut as your cinch point and just tape the tip of the cable to the rope.
