I recently picked up an '87 Martinique. Nice old boat, but, it needs a few maintenance items. One of them is the steering cable. I noticed during the test drive the steering was very stiff. I pulled the old cable out, and it has a part # of SSC1217717 5 ft. I have had a very hard time finding this cable. Nobody can seem to cross reference this Teleflex part #.
After a lot of research, it appears this is a special "Correct Craft" only cable with a 10.5" throw vs. a std cable with a 8.5" throw. Anybody else out there found a cost effective replacement for this cable. Looks like the part is $300+ from Nautique dealers. This cable was used on all '82-'90 Correct Crafts from what I have read. Anyone have a good used one for sale? |

Dave,
I'd worry about a used cable since it may not be in that much better shape than yours. Maybe you'll luck out and find a NOS that someone what's to sell but, I have a feeling you'll end up with that $300 cable. Just get out there and push some more gaylords!!

 I found a cable that I thought was going to work at The Boathouse (Lauderdale Lakes). Got it in the boat, and the throw was too short. I am going to see if I can locate a shorter tiller arm to compensate for the long tiller arm on there now. Might just end up going with the right cable and being done with it. Gosh, does that make sense!?!?!  I was just reading one of your posts on this very issue from earlier this year. You advised against doing it due to steering components stress and higher difficulty in steering. |

Dave,
I don't recall ever seeing an explanation of why CC used the longer throw cables. What I do know from a mechanical engineering standpoint is the setup results in less driver effort at the helm wheel and yes, less stress on the helm and cable. The only downside besides the OEM cost of the cable is the extra rotation at the helm wheel needed to get the same rudder movement. From a % standpoint, the reduction of effort and stress is about 20% |
