Try www.mcmaster.com Part Number: 5175K93 31/8" OD 3" ID. Pricy stuff though. $222.00 for 60" worth.

I've used 3" aluminized exhaust pipe before and never had any issues. I have also seen people use Schedule 40 PVC pipe for this.

I am going to try to stay with copper, but might try stainless if I can find some. I had no idea that the size of 3" OD is so hard to find...... everything I find is 3" ID... I have NO idea if the 3 1/8" OD will work, I have never tried to get the hose over that size. Maybe someone will have some used, out of an old parts boat.
Thanks, keep the ideas coming. |

Why don't you just use longer hoses, it would be cheaper?

I would be trying to replicate the sound and resonance (sp?) of the pipe in place of a fiberglass muffler. I think that using hose, the whole way back would possibly muffle the sound more than I want......but I don't know for sure.

The video link in my sig file is using almost 6 feet of 3" hardwall exhaust tubing per side on a 302 ford, give it a listen, not a lot of muffling...

I have the pipes that you need on my fish nautique. I am planning on installing mufflers to quite it down. I would consider trading for your mufflers if they are in descent shape.

When we were using that pipe, we built a device to swage the ends of the 3-1/8" OD down to 3". The pipe we used was the thinwall stuff. I think that a shop that does work on truck mufflers would have a swaging tool that would do the job. They have to swage the exhaust pipe so that it fits into the same size pipe. The copper pipe will be expensive.

Just to let ya know I am a plumbing foreman and all of our pipes are sized in I.P.S (internal pipe size). But I dont think this means you cant use it. They sell no hub bands in a ton of different sizes. Without checking I'd say you would need a 3" copper to 3" steel band which should allow for about 80 psi. Since this is an open system you should be well below that. I am not much of a motor guy, but if the exaust doesnt get over abot 130 F it should work without burning up the bands. Hope this helps.

For mine I used a larger size. I took the exhaust hose to a local muffler shop and hand them open the end up slighlty to fit the OD of the pipe. The longer copper pipe you use the better.
Good luck, Frank |

Snapper, I DO, I DO !!! I will try to get mine (mufflers) off this week. I dread it, and know I am going to tear something up doing it. That is why I haven't removed them yet,,,,,I don't want to spend money on new hose!!!! But I want to do it anyway. I will be in touch. Paul (980)581-0006

Paul...for what it's worth! My 72 mustang has the original copper exhaust ...my 72 SN has exhaust hose all the way back. I don't hear a difference! If any the SN MAY be a tad louder.

snapper'
Did Paul ever send you those mufflers? He's probably too busy arresting innocent old ladies and selling his hand-me-down boats to me. I've got a set off another boat I coincidentally inherited from him and could get them out to you next week. FYI for others, the copper pipe price, and esp for the thinnest wall stuff, was up until this past year cheaper per foot than reinforced rubber exhaust hose. Art, is that why CC and most other boat companies used it for so many years? Not to mention copper wouldn't delaminate if run really hot and would last for an eternity. |

I am still waiting to hear from Paul. I made a deal with him on the mufflers for the copper pipes.I would like to give him the first shot at the pipes, but yes I am still in need of some mufflers and I guess I am growing impatient as well as deaf. Thanks

Snapper, I have the BF boat in storage and it is 50 miles from me right now. I didn't get them off in time. If you want to get the mufflers from Reid, go right ahead. I am sorry for the delay, I really wanted the copper pipes, but just didn't get mine off like I thought I would.

Snapper, I didn't want to jump in front of Paul, as he's a buddy, and I don't need the copper pipes. I just knew that Paul was wrapped up and wasn't sure how soon you had to have the mufflers, but if you're good for a few more months, that's fine. If it gets to crunch time, you or Paul just let me know and I'll send mine out from here and you can send him the pipes and I'll collect from him.
